More Flash Resources.

May 29th, 2006

I found this one today and am loving the simple way he takes to teaching some great, and simple, off-camera flash techniques. Link: The Photographers Sketchbook

If you’re in Canada and looking to pick up the PocketWizards that are so highly praised in The Strobist, your best bet seems to be ordering from B&H Photo in NYC - they’re running a couple hundred dollars cheaper than in Canada for a transmitter/receiver set.

And if you happen to want to connect these miraculous remotes to a flash that DOES NOT have a PC Sync socket (like the Canon 430ex I have) then you’ll find this a needed item: Adaptor for PocketWizard

Lastly - I am on a ROLL here - if you want to use the classic softbox with a hotshoe flash and can’t figure out how to make one fit the other - this is a great work-around. And cheap. A handful of thick elastics and presto. Go HERE

The Epson Online Experience: Incredible Value for Digital Photographers

May 28th, 2006

Ok, the title is a little presumptuous as I have not yet taken this course, but watching the online demo I am *this* close to shelling out the modest $30 tution fee. Check it out here: Epson Online Experience and be sure to watch the preview. I think this will be of significant value to any photographer, but if you print any of your images it might be pure gold.

The Show: A Step Closer

May 24th, 2006

I’ve had a few prying questions about the show I keep aluding to. So here’s a little more. Long-time reader (ok, not THAT long…) reader Erin put me up to it. It was a thought in my mind but nothing pressing. Erin said I had to. The idea took root and has germinated. So, on my return from India in January I will prepare the final selection of images - 30? 40? to show. The show will likely be in March and will be a “coming out of the photographic closet” event for me - marking my transition from advanced enthusiast to so-called Professional. It will focus on the women and children of the third-world and half the proceeds from sales will go to an HIV/AIDS orphanage in Ethiopia. Here’s a sneak-look at the promo that will advance this event. (Sheesh, Erin, this thing is getting bigger all the time!) - the website (not up quite yet) will be www.WOMENANDCHILDRENFIRST.ca and I imagine the site will be up sometime in the next six months :-) Don’t hold yer breath. We need details and helpers first.

**Update** At Erin’s brilliant suggestion we are going to aim to hold this exhibition to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 08/07

Strobist Discovered

May 20th, 2006

If you have any interest in shooting with portable lighting this site is a must. I stumbled upon it today and can’t get away from it. I’ve been wanting some clear advice on shooting with a small, portable lighting set-up that uses hot-shoe flashes. This is a really good site. Start here at The Strobist

Websites for Photographers

May 17th, 2006

If you’re a photographer you could do much worse than putting your site up with Fluid Galleries - a friend of mine whose been a professional photographer for years is in the midst of making some decisions about his next website rebuild and found this. It provides some of the nicest dynamic galleries I have seen. If you’ve got a need to put a nice looking site up but no desire to fuss with code - this is it.

INDIA Bound

May 11th, 2006

The next significant addition to my humanitarian portfolio will be INDIA.

I booked my reward flights today with Aeroplan (ie. free flights!) and will be shooting there from the 6th to the 21st (plus travel days, the 5th to the 22nd) of January 2007. I have 239 days to go - so I should get packing. Would welcome any connections or contacts you might have in India - especially Jodhpur or Varanasi. If you’ve been, I’d welcome your thoughts, tips, suggestions…normal travellor’s stuff.
