Back-up Strategies.

May 27th, 2008

end-is-nigh1. If you haven’t backed-up your data in the last couple days, now is the time to do it. Go now, the class can wait.

2. Floundering for ideas to create a streamlined back-up strategy? Check out Scott Kelby’s strategy here - it’s nearly identical to my own. I’ve been meaning to write an update on how I backup my stuff, but Kelby’s post this morning is so close to the one I’d have written, I’m just going to point you there.

I got my DROBO last week and have yet to fill it with drives, so for now I use a 1TB LaCie for the redundant archives, another for offsite backup at a friend’s studio, and I use Hyperdrives instead of the Epson P5000 (Here’s a solid review of the Hyperdrive from Luminous Landscape.) I haven’t used Apple’s Time Capsule either, and instead just use a LaCie drive and SuperDuper to create a bootable copy every two days.

However you do it, do it simply, do it redundantly, do it often, do it now.

Amen brotha!!! I preach this all day everyday. I can’t count the number of freaked out photographers I’ve seen that have a failed hard drive and did not have the wedding they shot last week backed up. Keep preaching the back up word!

I use Titan Backup to backup to an external HDD my emails and important files.

You can test TB for free at :

Drobo is a very good looking system, but it uses it’s own proprietary system. when the Drobo will crash how will you recover?

Well, the point of the DROBO is to step out of the old RAID paradigm and build in redundancy at a software and hardware level, as I understand it. IF I have problems I will take advantage of DROBO’s service and have it fixed/recovered. And IF DROBO goes under, I will look for another system. Prices on gigabite space are falling dramatically, and file sizes for cameras keep going up - I look at storage as a 2-4 investment, tops, after which I will undoubtedly move on to something bigger/better/faster/safer/cheaper - who knows.

But for now the reviews I have heard from people I respect are solid. Your concerns are valid, but not enough, for me, to outweigh the pros of using this as an archive device.
