Monday’s All-About-Me Post

May 12th, 2008

Tune in to this week’s (Episode #133) PhotoshopUser TV, (now airing) to see yours truly making a guest appearance with Scott Kelby. (It used to be PhotoshopTV, now it’s Photoshop USER TV, presumably the change was made to reflect the addictive nature of Photoshop and the dependance-based behavior it induces.)

Let me know how it is because I’m not sure I have the strength to watch. There’s this scene in Almost Famous where the Russell, the leader of the band Stillwater, turns to the reporter and says, “just makes us look cool.” I’m not sure this is going to make me look cool.

We did one take and just as I was feeling I’d totally blown it but would get another take or two, Scott turns to me, calls me a one-take-wonder and we leave. No second take. No chance to get comfortable. No chance to rectify mistakes, like forgetting to mention Matt Brandon with whom I run the Lumen Dei tour. So if it looks like I’m fumbling for words and don’t know whether to look at the camera or at Scott - it’s no fancy camera trickery. All that discomfort is pure me, baby. Still, tune in. Might be worth a laugh. Link HERE.

LUMEN DEI - One Spot Left.
Related to the Photoshop TV fiasco interview, if you’ve come here regarding the Lumen Dei tour and workshop in Kashmir, we have only one space left now, so act fast.

NEED Magazine Blog
NEED Magazine has an online supplement to their excellent quarterly print magazine. This week they’ve published a personal piece I wrote about hope, and the role World Vision assignments have played in beating back my cynicism. Read that piece, and others here - Link to NEED Magazine online HERE. (Updated - the article is now up.)

David, no kidding, it was excellent. I’m sure the temptation is to be hyper-critical of yourself but I thought that you were eloquent and came across as being hugely enthusiastic, which we know you are.

Funny thing, even though I’ve got to know you recently and we do similar work, I found myself thinking “Wow, what a cool job and what a terrific guy”. I very nearly booked a place on the Lumen Dei Kashmir trek! Having the photos come up on screen was a real bonus and was invaluable as it really put what you were saying into context.

Truly, I don’t think you have any reason to be less than delighted by your appearance. The one-take makes it look fresh and natural and your obvious enthusiasm and energy carries it all through.

I’d say it was a job very well done and I was chuffed on your behalf as I watched it.

    Nice job.

Thanks Gavin. I actually bucked up and watched the thing. I wasn’t terribly embarassed, so that’s good. 12 years in comedy and having done alot of video I’m more critical than I ought to be. All the same, thanks for taking the bullet for me - I owe you one.

And yes, we do have such cool jobs. I never for a moment take it for granted. We’ll toast to that while we’re having a pint in Kathmandu together in the autumn. :-)

But seriously, thas was very enjoyable. Well done and congrats! It’s always nice to be spoken of highly by respected industry profesisonals and those guys love you. Best wishes. Mitchell

Thanks Mitchell. I guess the camera just didn’t see how wierd it all felt to me. But on par with the once-famous Rubber Chicken Guy? I think not. :-) (now, let’s all calm down and forget Mitchell ever brought up my sordid past.)
