Blackrapid R-Strap: Review & Giveaway

The good folks at Blackrapid were kind enough to send me some of their new straps to review and I’m passing the love on to you. Read to the bottom and I’ll tell you how you can win one.
The Problem
I hate straps and the less they get in the way the better. As a result I’ve come up with a way of working and rigging my straps that allows me to get them out of the way as much as possible, while still allowing me to grab my camera quickly. But until now there hasn’t been a strap that really jived with the way I work.
For years I’ve rigged my camera by one strap point - the bottom right corner, which you will only have on a pro body or if you use a vertical grip. Doing this allows my camera to hang out of the way and when I need it the straps aren’t in my face. I’ve also mostly used my strap in bandolier mode, across my body. Just feels more secure. But the problem is that bandoliers generally have no padding, and a conventional strap used as a bandolier doesn’t slide well and makes pulling the camera to the eye difficult. I also want a strap I can remove easily anytime I don’t need it.
The Premise
Enter the R-Strap. It’s a padded bandolier-style strap and it uses clip-on sliding camera mount hardware so the camera can be drawn from a suspended position to a shooting position very quickly.
The R-Strap comes in 3 versions right now. The R-Strap, the RS-2, and the RS-3 Camo. All function basically the same, though the RS-2 has a cell pouch and pockets for memory cards, and the RS-3 Camo is a camo version of the R-Strap, with a cell pouch, but not the other pockets. The website will help you understand the differences, but here’s some pics:
The strap is pretty simple in concept. The camera attaches, with a clip, to the camera in one of two ways - to the d-ring on your tripod plate, or with a supplied bracket that mounts to the camera by screwing into the threaded tripod socket. Once attached the camera hangs by your side and out of the way from that point. When you want to use the camera you reach down and pull it to your eye - the buckle slides easily along the strap allowing the strap to remain where it is. The camera moves, the strap doesn’t. Here’s a shot of the camera hanging - one from the tripod socket on the body, one from the socket on a longer lens.
The Review
It’s about time someone came up with this. It’s simple and works as promised. What I like best is how fast the camera can be brought to the face without the strap hanging up. The strap is comfortable and well made and the hardware is solid. There is a small plastic sleeve supplied with the clip to prevent the gate from accidental openings, and while it seems like a bit of an afterthought, it works well. I’m very confident in this product. It came in a nice mesh pouch - always handy for storing bits and pieces and a refreshing change from our packaging-addicted society that seems to demand shrink-wrap, plastic and cardboard to feed the landfill sites.
Of the three, I prefer the original R-Strap. The RS-2 is great but I’m less sold on the pockets. I’m a bit of a minimalist when it comes to this kind of thing, but some people will love this. The camo isn’t me at all, but again, some people will love it.
What don’t I like? With the strap mounted to the camera bottom via the fasten-R hardware, it’s nearly impossible to use a vertical grip. For me this is not a problem. As I said, for years I have been mounting straps to the bottom right strap point on the body, so I did the same here, clipping the R-Strap to a piece of climbers cord I’ve threaded and knotted into a secure loop. But without this I’d find it hard to hold, and for smaller hands than mine, virtually impossible. If this is a problem for you I’d encourage you to try my workaround, or mount the strap straight to a tripod mount plate without use of the fastenR hardware.
In an ideal world I’d also love to see a David duChemin Limited Edition R-Strap that has none of the padding. Just a long bandolier with the adjustable buckles and the clips. Sure, I could make one, but a guy can dream, right? I already wear alot of gear on the field, and a simple, no frills bandolier would be great. Anyone else want one? I’ll lean on Ron Henry, the inventor, and see what he can do for us minimalists.
Pros
Well made, easy-on/easy-off of strap, fast camera access, puts the camera where I like it when not shooting. I really like where it hangs with my 70-200/2.8 attached at the tripod mount ring. Some will love the pockets and pouches for CF cards, business cars, cell phones, batteries.
Cons
Some will say price but I’m a big believer in the “get what you pay for camp.” They retail for $44 to $56, depending on the model. I’d love to see a version even more basic than the original R-Strap.

Would I recommend the R-Strap?
Absolutely. Everyone works differently, so if you still like a conventional strap hung around your neck like a millstone, this might not be for you. But if you want comfortable, fast access to your camera, in a well-made strap, I’d give this one a 5 pixel rating.
So how do you get one for free?

Honestly the David duChemin Limited Edition R-Strap sounds like another good product for them to carry in some form, I frequently shoot w/ a sling style pack, and I’m not sure how the padding will work out. I’d like the RS-1, I’m hoping if it’s minimal enough to still allow my pack to move as intended.

With out a doubt a David duChemin Limited Edition R-Strap would be the IDEAL thing to use when up upon my seven-foot unicycle of death firing away on that new camera you helped pick out me… Grab the flaming torches, swivel up the camera, grab the shot, swivel back and start juggling…PERFECT! Saving that, I’d be happy with any of the non-name-monickered RS versions… And heck, Monday, July 28th is my 40th Birthday… If you were feeling a little less ‘random’ about your selection and wanted to encourage a 40-year-old juggler’s pursuits in the world of photography and award him for surviving the first 40 years on the planet it sure would be a wicked way to start the coming circumnavigation around the sun!

I’ve seen the R-Strap before from another website. It definitely looks useful for someone like me who constantly uses two bodies both with large telephoto lenses simulataneously. I never got one because i like to try the things out before i send any money out. The regular R-Strap would be the one that i’d like to try just because it’s the simpliest one that they have. I’m already carrying enough gear with straps. I don’t need a bulky strap that interferes with my other equipment. With that said, i’d probably want to see and use a “David duChemin Ltd Edition version”. A minimalist R-strap would pack a little bit easier in the pocket when i’m headed to events on the road.

Hi David - Great blog, very informative, keep it up! Nice write up on the BlackRapid R straps. I like the RS-2 for the pockets, makes it easier to know where all the little stuff is! BUT I would probably choose the RS-1 just for it’s simplicity. Either one beats the chiropractor visits for neck problems.
And of course I’d like to see the David duChemin Ltd Edition version…
Quite a coincidence, I just ordered the RS-2 two days
ago. I hope I like it as much as you do.

I’d love an RS 1.
This could be the first time I’ve used a camera strap in years. I always appreciate well thought out and well designed products. Apply a little experience and intelligence to something and the results can be wonderful. Funny how that recipe is ignored so often. The Rapid Strap looks like a product done right. (I actually watched those videos a couple weeks ago after your first post.)
The quick clip is key. I don’t like a lot of extra stuff in the way when I grab for my camera; reason 1 for not using a strap. Reason 2 is I often find myself in high winds that whip straps around. Sometimes painful, always annoying.
RS-2, please!!! That nifty pouch/zipper area would be super handy!
“Intro to the R-Strap” is the best video, though shooting it outdoor on location will make it better.

Great review as always David - and thanks for giving us the opportunity of winning one of these straps! As I still don’t have a camera strap for my new camera (I hate to have it hanging aroung my neck!), this is really a great alternative.

Well, I wasn’t super excited about the strap until I watched the video. Now I’m excited about it. The ability to quickly grab the camera while at the same time having it securely around your person, A+ in my books.
I’d have to say the plain ole R-Strap is what i like the best. Simple and clean, the way I like it.

Second- this strap looks like the thing I’ve been looking for! (also shameless, but fortunately true). I would actually take the camo one, the RS-3. I spend a lot of time shooting birds and wildlife- so the softer colors are good- but they all look great! Loved the video of shooting in Mexico.

I’ve been tempted to order one of these since the first time you posted about these. I’m still wondering about the fastener being on the bottom of the body since I use my vertical grip quite often. Even so, I think this will simplify life with a second body!

Let me explain to you why I need the RS-2. I realize the selection of Lucky! Winners! is random, but I need to tell you my sob story anyway. Please have your tissues ready. Weeping may ensue.
Last month while escorting my godson (also known as MY BABY!!) around Jiggle Jam, getting a few shots of his brothers, the clip that holds my current strap to the right side of the camera just broke off. No warning! Just like that! THE HORROR! Had I not been cradling my camera with the hand that was not pushing MY BABY’s stroller, my camera would have been smashed to bits on the pavement. Instead, I was just unable to carry it using a strap anymore. I took it to a camera repair shop, and they said, “Oh, honey, you have to *send that in* to get it fixed.” Since I was leaving for New York City in three short days, that wasn’t a possibility, so they hooked me up with two flimsy O-rings that hooked both ends of the strap to the left side of the camera and charged me $10. This system kind of works, but not comfortably. Also, it looks kinda ghetto. Not that I don’t love the ghetto, but my camera is too delicate for that sort of thing, so I’m sure you can imagine how it feels. Poor camera, beaten up and ill-used.
I want the RS-2 because it would restore my camera’s fragile self esteem and also because it has pockets, and I love pockets. If I get the RS-2, I plan to practice whipping out my cell phone and answering it so I can be just as smooth as the guy in the video. I might even wink every time I answer. Wouldn’t that be fun? Admit it, it would.

I’m way ahead of you! I just received my RS-2 in the mail yesterday! Like you I hate camera straps… so much so that I almost never use one, preferring to carry my camera in my hand instead. I know, carrying two cameras gets awkward. But this new idea in camera straps may be just be what I’ve been looking for, especially because I already, usually, have a Manfrotto plate mounted to each of my cameras.
Now, unlike you, David, I bought the version with some pockets just to be safe. Man, I think the pocket for the memory cards is the best idea I’ve seen for carrying several memory cards yet… right on top of your shoulder! Excellent!
I agree with you about a non-padded version. I would buy it in addition to a padded one just for those times when I’m wearing an already padded camera harness or vest.
Finally, the price. I intially thought the price was a bit steep but having received it I now appreciate the quality and don’t think the price is out-of-line, especially because shipping to Canada was a very reasonable $10. And it arrived in two days, Amazing!
Would I like another one… yes please… an R-Strap would be nice!

Not sure how the wording David duChemin Ltd Edition RS-0 would fit along the length of the strap and be in any way visible. Looks a neat concept if working with a belt system. Could it be made to work with a backpack? I think my preference would be for the RS-1 or the special edition (with or without gold lettering) though I can’t remember winning anything in a competition since that budgie at Butlins 40 years ago!

Oops, I purchased an RS-1 last week. I liked the concept of having an extra pocket, ie. RS-2 but found it to be too much in my face when the camera was in shooting position. Its a very good idea, I am glad to be using it, however, it is way over priced. I believe that I could purchase all of the necessary parts at the hardware store for under $10.00. For another $10 I can get David duChemin embroidered on the strap. Send me a check.
Well it’s true: valuable giveaways increase amount of comments. I’m going to keep that in mind. It’s bound to come in handy if I ever have something valuable I can afford to give away.
The title of this post struck me as funny. I mean, really funny. Made me want to write one called “Child’s Abandoned Lollipop Covered in Dog Slobber and Belly-Button Lint: Review & Giveaway”. But then it turned out that it was a serious review for a serious product, and somehow that didn’t seem appropriate anymore. Like telling “yo Momma’s so fat” jokes at your Mother-in-law’s funeral.
Hey, did anyone else wonder how they got that DSLR to make motorised film advance sounds? And does that camera need to make a 10-second rewind sound before you can remove its card? (Did you notice how subtly I just demonstrated that I indeed watched the video, and thus am ever so carefully following instructions? Yeah man, I put the “smart” in smart aleck!)
Right then. I’d love a camo one, but the idea of getting picked off in some foreign location because my camera quote looked like a possible rocket propelled grenade launcher perched as it was under the dappled shade of a banana tree and aimed as it was at a bunch of bananas sir unquote makes me feel a little iffy. (Bear with me here. While I do recognise that the pouch could possibly hold a silver-plated, hand-engraved, life-saving, bullet-catching cigarette case, there’s kind of a snag. I don’t smoke. Doesn’t that suck!? I’d never have the chance to sit around the Veteran Photographer Association’s Annual Camp Fire (that’s pronounced VPAACF) and glibly proclaim — every year — that smoking saved my life. Nope, I’d just be dead. All in all, better not temp fate with the camouflage.) I’ll have to go with the RS-2.
I’m a sucker for red highlights on my straps. If your version was black and said “David DuChemin Limited Edition” in bright red, I’d have to buy one. And if you added “Colour Scheme Suggested by brad” I’d have to buy two! I don’t see anyone else here making that promise. I’m just sayin’…
Quick outro: I don’t know how you’re going to pick your winners, but I’d just like to point out that I spewed out a ton of needless verbiage in this comment. Just in number of words alone, I think I may have earned having my name being thrown in the hat a couple times. Unless you’re rewarding brevity. And if you are, is it too late to stop now?

After watching you shoot in India, I can see how you’d love this strap design. Especially when the connecting point is moved to the bottom corner of the camera. Anyway, I’d love the original R-Strap, but whatever’s fine.
I personally would like the RS-2 since when I’ve gone minimalist I’ve forgotten a CF card in one of my pocketts and it went through the wash. Having this strap would avoid situations like that in the future.
I also think a David duChemin Limited Edition R-Strap would be great to have when carrying a second body (no other fluf to get in the way). Also I would like to see how these stay out of the way with a second body.
As an urban photog I would avoid the camo.
As it frequently happens it is the small, simple things that go a long way and make you bang your head why did’nt I think of that before! Given the available options I would love to get a free RS-2, but I realy see a market for a minimalistic vertsion (or maybe you can just strip the existing ones)

I’m lookin’ to relieve some severe neckpain–R-strap looks to be the ticket! RS-1 would be great if my name pops up.
I shoot a lot of sports/events for my kids’ school. Great way to spend time with them and their friends without being “too close”. (And it beats a day at the office–I highly recommend it!)
The duChemin Limited Edition should feature a distinctly Canadian flair, I suppose–perhaps a thick, furry lining. (I’m in Florida….Canada = Cold to us.)

I wonder if it would work well with a flash bracket. I can totally see myself wearing the RS-1 while doing some outside portrait stuff. There’s a video of Ron Henry doing that very thing. It’s always been ridiculous for me to have two cameras with shoulder straps hanging off me. That’s another thing, I wonder how it would be with two of these things on the same side. Oh, and totally sign me up for a Dadu Ltd edition. The more basic the better.

that´s great news. I´ve been travelling through Canada for four months straight (gotta go home next week, though) and the one thing always hated about my camera was it´s strap. I´ve walked through the Rockies, the badlands, the praries, cities, basically every situation and I always had trouble putting my camera somewhere!!
Just today I “again” wondered why there can´t be anything useful out there and ….pop…there´s your post!

I’m liking the RS-1. I may give one a try whether I win or not. I like the camera hanging by the hip when on long hikes, and being able to whip it around and shoot a bear in 0.21 seconds is priceless. It’s funny, I was just in Salulita a few weeks ago. It’s so colorfull In Mexico, bright pinks, greens, yellows, so much to shoot. I had a great time breaking in my new 40D.
Seems like an awesome strap. I’ll often shoot with a hand strap when traveling, but then my one hand is tied up with the camera. I wonder if the lens is bumped around much?
Seems like the low profile of the RS-1 would work.

This strap looks like it will be perfect… I hate it when I am walking all day and the strap around my neck carying 3 to 5 lbs of camera is worn out… not from the weight but from the strap rubbing on my skin.. I would love to get an RS-1

After viewing the webiste video and reading the informative and practical review (blatant suck up), this falls into the “why didn’t I think of that. It’s so easy”.
I would love a RS-1 as it will get one body out of the way while using the second. A David duChemin Ltd Edition version would be ideal but I’d settle for the basic RS-1 until one is available.

RS-2 is Awesome. Really could have used something like this a month ago when shooting a baptism and no flash were allowed in the church and could have helped in my juggling two camera bodies with different lenses.
This strap is perfect! Exactly what I am looking for. With 3 children from 1-5 years old, I have been looking for an easier way to keep from dropping the camera (or worse yet bonking my poor kids on the head with it) when on family outings. Thanks for the post. If I were to win, I would love the RS-2. Cell phone, memory cards, money and camera all in a strap. Doesn’t get any better than that!

What a great idea, the R strap! Love to have an R Strap
Although it pains me to think of my camera as a millstone, I must admit that the image is fitting. These straps are very nice. Great video too! While watching it, I could imagine the full 30 minutes infomercial featuring the *free* David duChemin Ltd Edition version for those who call within the next 10 minutes.
This being said, R Strap please!
I’m a minimalist too, so my first choice would be the David duChemin Ltd Edition version, but until that’s available, the original R-Strap would be my pick. Cheers!

Personally I’d go with the RS-1. RS-2 would be cool also.
But any of them are better than other camera straps out there. Recently I’ve been testing just a wrist strap since I’ve been so tired with neck straps. But I’ve just encountered too many times where I need both hands while traveling, so I’m going to have to go back to a neck/shoulder strap.
Only worry would be the quick clip (too easy to unclip?), but besides the plastic sleeve there must be plenty of ways to take care of that. All in all, I’m really happy I found out about this strap…

Well. I think I post out of time, so, I think I’ll must to pay (maybe tomorrow) the $44 to get my own original R-Strap. It looks great.
