Havana? Cairo? Hanoi?
July 27th, 2008![]()
This January I’m traveling around the world for a project and among other places will be spending time in Havana, Cairo, and Hanoi. I’m pretty stoked.
The interactivity on this blog has been awesome lately, so in keeping with that I thought I’d throw this one out there – if anyone has been to either Havana, Cairo, or Hanoi, and has any recommendations on accomodations, local contacts, must-see or off-the-beaten-track kind of stuff, please drop a comment.
My time in each is limited so the more research I do now the less time I’ll spend waste while in-country.
Thoughts, suggestions, recommendations are welcome. Looks like I’ll be in Hanoi during Tet – very excited about that.
The image above was taken on my last night in Tunisia at the Sfax train station. January 2008. Man it was cold. My buddy Henri took the photo, but I did the duo-tone and old-photo faking. If you want a tutorial on this let me know.
I haven’t been to Hanoi, although I know a shooter there: Kevin German. Also, I’d have to confirm, but I think Lee Turner is there as well.
Kevin is a former Sacramento Bee staff photographer and speaks some Vietnamese. If I was headed to Vietnam, I would at least send him an email. You can find Kevin’s blog at: kevingerman.blogspot.com
He’s also on lightstalkers
I don’t know any photography stuff about any of the locations, but I do know that according to Anthony Bourdain the street-food in Vietnam is supposed to be amazing.
I’m stoked!
Uhmm… so ya. That’s my contribution. Glad to help!
Alas, I haven’t been to any of these place either. But I wanted to tell you how much I love the ‘creases’ you added to the image above. Adds a whole other layer of story.
Dude,
You’re coming to Cairo too late. I move to California in a couple of weeks, otherwise you could have crashed at my place in the middle of the city.
Regardless, when I get a chance, I’ll put together a list of the less obvious areas of Cairo to aim your lens.
Cheers,
Heath
I’d love the tutorial.
The more tutorials the better im way behind
on everything digital but pedaling as fast as I can to catch up
Thaks

Warning!
If you planned to be in Ha-Noi during Tet (Vietnamese New year), the city will almost like”stand still” for at least 3 days, because many workers go back to their villages to celebrate with their families, stores and offices will be closed… It’s pretty boring, unless you were invited and stay with a VN family. I just came back from March/Apr trip and you can check out my journey from the link to my website.
Hey David,
Those sound like some kickin’ places to photograph. I think being able to be in Vietnam during Tat would be to be with a local Vietnamese family. Knowing your skill I smell some AWESOME pictures brewing
. I’m working something that may be right up your alley being a professional blogger/photographer. Drop me an email and I can discuss it with you to see if you’d be interested.
Cheers,
