I don’t interpret “… if you can’t imagine doing anything else” as meaning you have to focus on one thing; in my interpretation the idea refers to us following our passions, not someone else’s passion (or money); therefore ff one’s passion is to do everything at least once, then go for it…

I think it holds some truth – but what if you imagine doing everything at least once?

Completely agreed, David: but it’s tough. Few of us really have the self-confidence to know “who we should be” or even “who we are” without outside touchpoints, models or guides.

In my opinion, the only growth we are ever really successful at are the efforts that come from us and our passion; attempting to learn something to fill a gap or a market need without the personal passion never works out.

My cousin Chris co-runs a game development company, and his advice to people that want to create video games: Only do it “if you can’t imagine doing anything else.”

I think that holds true for photographers, entrepreneurs, etc., anyone that takes ideas and creates realities.

Excellent post David.

I passed through the arrogance phase awhile ago (hopefully passed through) and I’m currently battling the “I am a worm for I am small of talent and large of belly and ugly of face” – wonderful quote by the way – stage to some degree.

Now, in regards to knowing your history – could you please explain Minor White to me?
