Within The Frame Thursday
May 7th, 2009
A few book-related things this morning. Keep reading, there’s free stuff. Or potential free stuff.
First, the book is shipping! Several readers have emailed me saying they just got notice their pre-order was now shipping from Amazon. Folks that ordered direct from Peachpit are getting similar notices. So while May 11 is the official release, looks like Christmas is coming early. Right now the Amazon site says it’s in stock tomorrow, May 08.
Second, signed copies are still available. For those still emailing about signed copies – yes, they are still available. More information HERE.
Third, there will be Within The Frame related events in Vancouver on June 13, New York City on June 21, and Seattle on June 27. I’ll have more info as it’s available closer to the time, but I’d love to see you at any of those. Stay tuned.
Fourth, my publishers and I are doing a Twitterview today at 11am PST. It’s an interview over Twitter and it seems the theme they’ve chosen is a rather tongue-in-cheek WWDD, or What Would David Do? So take it with a heavy dose of humour and join us there. You might still have time to submit questions. More info on getting in on it go HERE.
Fifth, there is a Within The Frame group on Flickr HERE. We will be starting a ten-episode podcast that draws from the images submitted to that pool, and critiquing them with an eye to the principles and thoughts I discuss in the book. We have almost 60 members already which is pretty cool for a book not even out yet, but I’d love to have you join us and submit your images, as well as being part of the conversations going on over there. I’ll drop in from time to time, but th Within The Frame group was created as a place for readers to connect and discuss.
Sixth and finally, I’ve got 3 signed copies of WTF to give away. It’s been a month since the last giveaway on PixelatedImage Blog and I aim to change that. So, anyone leaving a comment on this blog post, along with a name and email address where I can reach you, will be entered into a random draw at the end of the month and I’ll give away 3 signed copies of the book and ship them to you anywhere in the world. I know authors are meant to be pretty cool about this stuff, but I’m pretty darn excited about it, so I hope you’ll join me in celebrating. Leave a comment, win a book. Update: Comments are now closed. We got all spontaneous and caved in early.
If you have no idea what all this is about, go HERE for more information. ![]()

Congratulations. Exciting times and I’m looking forward to the read.
Congratulations on the new release. Any plans for other Canadian dates for a WTF tour. Seems Toronto is starving for this kind of stuff these days.
Anyway if I miss the free copy I am sure chapters will have in stock soon enough
Great job with the book!
I only recently came across your blog and I have to say you are quite inspirational! I’d love your job!
Congratulations! I can’t wait to finally see it!
Congratulations! The book looks great on the PDF I am waiting for it to become available in Amazon Germany.
Congratulations on your book and can’t wait to see it. Looks to be a valuable resource book for my ever growing collection of photo books.
You’re getting really good at marketing, aren’t ya?
Congrats! I assume you’re having sleepless nights while waiting for the first hard-copy!
WTF . . . I smile every time I see that! Amazon UK are estimating delivery from June 1-3 . . . maybe they’re bringing it over by steam boat! Looking forward to expanding my vision.
Congratulations! By any chance you’re not doing a Within The Frame event in Europe, do you?
WTF may as well be the best book name I have ever seen
Woot! Congratulations! And I’m really looking forward to your podcasts…
Haven’t placed my order yet. Perhaps I’ll wait now to see what happens at the end of the month.
Have no words to tell how much I’ve already learned by reading your blog day by day! I’m a huge fan of your photographic principles and the way you “vision” the world. You’re the master, that kind of guy I wish I could seat on a table coffee to take a very long conversation about photography… and life. Thank you so much for your inspiration and knowledge. About the book, well I’m very excited to have it, but I have too wait by the “on-order” commmand at Amazon.co.uk, because I can’t find it in Portugal… a shame. Got used to it.
“Um abraço e obrigado!”
I have red the first chapter. You did a great job. Congratulation.
@Angel Colas: you could pre-order it at Amazon.de!
Here’s the link:

Und ich wünsche Dir viel Spass beim Lesen
And David: congrats, so much looking forward to it!
So excited about the book and the podcasts!!
Free books I might not always warrant my time (too many out there), but GOOD books are another story =]
Too bad you’re only having the events in North America!
Yeah! My book will finally be shipped!
No notice from Amazon.ca yet – though I just GOT 4 photography books in the mail last week… maybe my wife won’t notice the fifth.
I’m pumped up! I’ll keep checking daily for my copy to arrive!
Congratulations! It must feel great to have it finally out there after all the work you put into it.
Congrats on the book! It looks very very cool.
Congratulations, I’m looking forward to reading WTF. keep up the work on your great blog which is always a pleasure to read.
Congrats David – you’ve earned it.
fantastic work David..
Admire the work and the spirit, keep it up!
Consider this one of the three winning entries for this month’s contest. Consider it very carefully.
And congrats – looking forward to stealing my friend Stacy’s copy after she’s done reading it. After all – she stole my McNally…
David: yours is one of my “must read” blogs and I’m really looking forward to the book.
Your book is exactly what our photography students need to read. Congratulations on your hard work in the field, and thanks for your contributions on this blog!
WTG on WTF! Koodos to you David for a job well done. Keep it up as it makes a difference in the lives of many of us. Cheers
David, love the first chapter – already ordered mine! Based on David Vernon’s comment above – if he intends to steal it from me, then clearly I am going to need another copy. Maybe if I get lucky and have a signed copy he can “steal” the unsigned one! Oh, and I believe I borrowed and safely returned McNally. Boy, what you’ve gotta do to keep the record straight! =)
Good on ya David! Really excited about the book and have really enjoyed following your progress over the last few years. Congrats on this milestone. Looking forward to what comes next.
The book looks to be an excellent read – can’t wait to read it – Congratulations
Exciting stuff David. Looking forward to seeing the book.
Just read the downloaded chapter. Fantastic stuff.
Winnipeg would be happy to see you. Let me know if you can make it here and I’ll promo you in the photo club I belong to.
I will buy the book if I don’t win one.
Happy to have found you-mentioned by WD Welsh in his blog.
Why is it that cool photo events like these never quite make it to Wisconsin? Oh, why did I move from California.
Again, thanks for all your insight; I know I have benefited from your openness.
matt
Congrats David – free is great but I’m really looking forward to more details on the release event in June!
Congrats! Can’t wait to have a look at WTF!
Can’t wait to read the book (and look at the gorgeous photography too, of course

Many congrats on the book. I can’t wait to see it in person!

Congratulations! Cant wait to get my grubby little paws on your lovely clean new book.
Cheers Heinz
I can’t wait for this book…would be great to wing one…not sure if I can wait that long…..arggggh…
Always great to read your posts David.
Too bad I’m living in Europe, too far from all those great events…
Keep on your fantastic work!
Congratulations! I’m excited to get my hands on it!
Congratulations of the book! I can’t wait to read it. You are an inspiration to us all. Thanks.

Congratulations! I’ve been following your blog for awhile now and can’t wait to read your book.
Leave a comment, win a book? What could be simpler and better than that?
Whether that actually happens or not I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
Love reading your blog. I’d love to read you book too.
New to photography and found you on twitter! This book sounds like a must have for any photographer! Thanks for helping everyone out with their passions.
Hi,
Would love to get a grip on that book – but its rather hard to get a copy here in Ecuador and shipping is outrageous and unreliable…
Congrats!
Hi,
I’ve only just been introduced to you through Twitter. I’m a photography sponge and looking forward to absorbing your book.
Congratulations on the book! Always been a fan of your site for the articles and the resources section.
Congrats on the release
I am a newbie photographer. I am looking forward to reading the book asap!
Congratulations David! It’s going to be a great summer read.
And getting a free copy would be great as it would offset the plane-ticket-to-anywhere expense I’m guessing I’ll have after turning that last page!
I’m a new followerer! Looking forward to learning lots from your books and blogs!
Congratulations on the Release. Looking forwward to seeing it.
Can’t wait to read this book. WTF FTW!!
Looks like I have a new book for my wishlist.
Looking forward to picking up a copy of it. Congrats.
Thanks and congratulations, David! As both a photographer and improviser with much to learn, you’ve definitely inspired me to be better in both in the few weeks since I’ve found your site.
Hey David – we are very excited for you and the book. I hope it sells great for you.
And on the vision front while I have not really been focusing on the photography lately your vision posts still strike a chord in where I am ministry wise. Great stuff and thank you!
Tim
Hey David, your excitement is definitely contagious. Good luck with the twittercast, I’ll be ‘listening in’…. and I would love to win a copy of the book.
Congratulations on your book. I ordered a signed copy for myself, but still would love a second copy to give to a dear friend of mine who is more of a visionhead than a gearhead.
The cover is great, very curious about inside stuff.
Congrats on the book! I will definitely have to check out your flickr group
This is so exciting! I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing you in Seattle, and to seeing your book.
Congratulations on the release of your book! It looks great!!
I was defiantely one of the gazillion that asked about signed copies.
Count me in.
Cool, just finished going through your interview on twitter! Nicely done!
First of all, congrats on the book. Can’t wait to read it. Secondly, loved the Peachpit interview. A great idea well executed.
Wish you success in sales for sure.

Congrats on your book! Can’t wait to get my copy in the mail
I just came across your work through the Socially Responsible Safari to Kenya in January – I love your work! I can’t wait to see more of it in your book!
Congratulations! I’m sure it must feel very cool to have a book you’ve produced in your hands. I’m omw over to the flickr group to see what’s up
I ordered the book from Amazon when you first announced it. I was looking forward to meeting you at Studio R in Seattle, however, sad to say, I will be in Morocco on that date.
Congratulations. I live in Vancouver so I’m pleased I’ll be able to meet you in person on June 13th — date already marked in the calendar & it’s a Saturday so no reason for work to keep me away.
Just walked in from the balcony after shooting (and eating) some of my garden crops. I have such a novice vision, if you can even call it a vision. Looking forward to developing it through WTF.
All the best with the book and congratulations! I hope the event in NY involves a book signing.
I enjoy reading your blog and look forward to reading your book, too! I’m sure its contents will have me exclaiming, “WTF! Amazing!”
Congratulations on the new book.
I would love to win a copy, but I probably won’t be able to wait.
My main reason for writing is to thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge. I’m continually amazed by the generosity of folks like yourself, McNally, Hobby, Arias, and many others I have yet to discover. It’s a great rush to learn and advance our skill, and is humbling that you take moments to share.
Thanks again!
WIGAFC….hmmmmm….lets see
Hurray!!! Its finally here! REALLY looking forward to this.
I’m going to post a thing about it too!
Draw away!
Just stumbled in. Eager to check it out what the raving is all about….
Congratulations on the new book! By draw or actual purchase- I am looking forward to having a copy soon. Hope your book tour makes it to the Denver area at some point.
Congratulations!
Congratulations on the book. I can’t wait to read it. Got my fingers crossed for the draw!
Any chance you’ll be coming to Calgary for one of your events?
David, I know pictures of India must be in the book and maybe even Delhi? I hope you’d consider having a WTF event here too. Looking forward to seeing the book in the post after my trip to Kerala.
Congrats David! It’s a long time coming and I’m sure you’re breathing relief!
I can’t wait to get your book! I’ve got a stack of books to read, but yours won’t be collecting dust like the others have been. I hope I’m lucky enough to win one of your books, otherwise I’ll be buying an additional one to send to a friend. Congrats! You must be so excited!
OMG YOUR FREEAKIN FAMOUS! hahaha, 91 posts in one day has got to be one of ur personal records, and for good reason too!!!
Your success is inspirational to all of us, to see you ‘do it’ keeps our hopes fueled that one day we might just ‘do it’ too, where ever that falls in our own dream scape. As i finished up school this month, that fuel is more important than ever, to get off my butt and get going.
I would love to make it over for the party and i think ill hold out to get one signed in person. Congrats David… It would seem from what Ive learned about you in this short time, you are blessed and deserving. Enjoy this success.
Blessed to be a blessing.
Cheers!
Congratulations david from down under in New Zealand. Hope you are thinking about the next book!
Cheers
Congratulations!
Yay! The culmination of passion. I really love your use of colour. The juxtaposition of complementary hues makes for exciting images.
I never win giveaway’s such as these but thought I would try anyway!
Really looking forward to seeing your book and I’m sure it’s going to be a great one to add to anyone’s collection.
Keep up the great work!
Congratulations David on reaching such a fine achievement I know I’ve learned so much from this website so I’m sure to learn even more from one of your books. Hope I win one, but if not, congrats to whoever does.
-Zach LeBar
LOL…………….Well, even though I’m comment #99, and I never win anything, I’ll still leave my comment. What budding photographer wouldn’t want to win your great new book.
Found your web site in the last week based on following a reference from Joe McNally to MD Welch who mentioned you, your site and your book. I’ve enjoyed reading your blog. I look forward to reading your book too.
I am so envious of you and the book. I did a book on rodeo years ago (that was never published) and the process, the photography, writing and layout kept me going for months. My inability to get it published (I sent “blads” to a dozen or book publishers a great disappointment. Congratulations.
jack
Congrats on the book. I’m looking forward to your Seattle visit end of June.
Fabrice
Read the teaser and I am stoked to read the rest!
Sounds like a great book. Looking forward to reading it.
I look forward to this greatly!
Well done on the book, I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I’d say good luck on the pod casts but I’m sure they’ll be excellent.
Can hardly wait to get my grubby little hands on a copy of this (by any means!) It will be easier to cart to the unplugged places than your blog!
Congratulations on this Davi!
I really need to spend 5 seconds looking at what I type. DaviD!
My copy arrived today via Amazon/USPS – and it looks great! Time to settle in on the porch with a cold one and start reading.
Really looking forward to receiving my copy of the new book . . . only thing better would be own an autographed copy! Congratulations on being published.
I’ve read the sample and cannot wait to read the whole lot. Congratulations!
Absolute-awesomeness!!! Eager to rip open the delivery box, shed the cellophane and experience your visual storytelling, WTF! Congrats!!! BTW, go Canucks!
I’d love one of your books, David!
I would love one of your books, you are a very inspirational author.
Congratulations on completing the book and getting it to the public! Your images are inspiring and I can’t wait to read it!
“Please Sir, may I have some more?”
Even though my friends and I have all ordered our books, I need to spread the love around.
Congratulations David! It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
Sabrina.
Since I retired I have been pinching pennies and resisting every book that I can, but the free “teaser” on the web wiped out my resistance. I can’t wait to get a a copy in my hands.
The pdf excerpt has already inspired me. Looking forward to what the whole package will give me.
Great to see the culmination of all your hard work has paid off.

Who doesn’t love free stuff? I believe to day the official release day, so I’d like to offer you my official congratulations! I love what I’ve seen so far. You do great work David.
I’m glad the book is shipping. I know I’m not going to win so I’ll have to buy it… Good luck with everything that comes after releasing a book.
I’ve already set aside your Seattle date. Thanks for coming here.
Sounds fascinating!
Looking forward to see it in Canada
The excerpt looks really nice! Great job!
