June Giveaway: APC & WTF

June 17th, 2009

wtf-canvas

I got a nice surprise yesterday afternoon from Lew at APC (Artistic Photo Canvas). The Fed Ex guy came with a huge box containing two 20×30 canvases made from the Tunisian image that graces the cover of Within The Frame. That wasn’t the surprise. The surprise was how gorgeous the canvases were. I keep meaning to get a bunch of canvases made, just to see what they look like, and I keep not getting around to it. Lew made it easy and as a thanks to my readers for the support you’ve shown me for Within The Frame, and as a welcome to new readers that arrived here after reading the book, I’m giving away one of these canvases. It’ll be signed, and shipped to you straight from me.

So what do you have to do to get your name in the hat for this one-of-a-kind canvas? Two simple things. First, go check out APC’s website at ArtisticPhotoCanvas.com – then come back here and leave a comment that contains your name and your email in the email field. Every time I do this some wiseguy forgets to leave an email address. I have neither the time nor the inclination to send smoke signals or carrier pigeons to let you know you’ve won. But I want to give stuff away, so make it easy for me. Also, while the draw is random, it wouldn’t hurt to remind me of a reason why I should pick you. Will it help your chances any? Not a bit, but you’ll amuse me and you can’t put a price on that.

Finally – this is open to people from all corners of the globe. BUT if you’re outside Canada and the USA and you want this you’ll have to commit to splitting the shipping costs with me. I’ll pay half, but after seeing how much it costs to send a book to you international types, a canvas ain’t gonna be cheap.

Draw closes on or around July 01, depending on when I end up leaving for Ethiopia.

Why APC? They’re passionate and focused, and I like passion, vision and the kind of customer care that you don’t get much these days. They create exceptional stuff and serve their clients with abandon. My relationship with them is young but I’m hooked. Sure, they’re a long way away from me, but the canvases came in perfect condition by Fed Ex and their prices meet or beat most others while providing true giclee quality. I’ll post more about my relationship with APC as it develops, but I’m already pretty sure I’ll have them do some of, if not all,  the images for my next exhibit.

Choose me, because I wrote the first review about your book for the German Amazon-website (http://www.amazon.de/Within-Frame-Journey-Photographic-Vision/dp/0321605020/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books-intl-de&qid=1245233954&sr=8-1). And I am a nice girl, so please be nice too ;-)

Oh these are cool! Before I got married, I had tons of family photographs on the mantle and on shelves. My husband never liked it so many got put away, and I scrapbooked others. He’s been dead for 8 years and it’s time to cover the bare walls again. Canvases would be very nice! Thanks for the contest.

I lovethe colours in that image and it looks cool as a canvas. APC site looks good, nice to see someone offer free basic exposure and colour correction.

I have been visiting APC for a couple of weeks now and all I have to say is it looks like they make beautiful canvases. There have been some tweets of people sharing with their canvases and all I can is WOW. Please choose me…the WTF cover canvas looks AWESOME….

Who knows what might happen if you pick me. I may have some visionary explosion because of the print and go on to earn millions of dollars and then give it all back to you. Or I might not also. But your stuff truly is inspirational.

Great job on the book. I love reading and rereading it. Vision can be taught! At least with me:)
Also thanks for introducing me to a whole bunch of good photographers through your site. If ever you’re in the Okanagan wanting to do a workshop I’ll help your organize and promote.

  12. comment number 12 by: Matthew Speicher

At some point, I’d like to put one of my shots on canvas like that . . . just have to decide which one. I’d truly appreciate the signed canvas because we have a huge wall in our home reserved for photos but we haven’t put any up yet. We just don’t know where to start. Your canvas is definitely something that both my wife and I could agree on (and that is a miracle).

  13. comment number 13 by: Andre J

Even though I’m based in Australia, if you pick me, I can actually pick it up from Vancouver later this year. That way you can actually get to meet the person who will have your print on their wall :-)

  14. comment number 14 by: Tim

The unstretched canvas looks like ti could be fun for creative home hangings. I am a CoD user so far but I will probably check these guys out as well.

I havent been as diligent recently coming to your blog David. Life is just crazy busy. Congregation makes their vote the 28th and then I will hopefully have a new full time job. Business is still on the sidelines for now. Whats cool though is that now I pretty much only take pics for me. I am my only client.

    Hope all is well!

Ok…I don’t know what OBA-FREE means but this must be good. There prices actually seem pretty reasonable as well.

  16. comment number 16 by: Edwin van Nuil

Reading your book at the moment and it contains so many beautiful pictures. It would be great to have one hanging on my wall.

  17. comment number 17 by: John Nutzman

Hey, congrats on all the success with your book. I have it and will start reading it as soon as my final paper is submitted this weekend.

Please choose me because I need all the help I can get, and what better reminder of all your lessons than a canvas of the cover picture of your book hanging on my wall?

  18. comment number 18 by: Kevin Pereira

I found you, miss new canvas.
wrap it up and send it over to me.
get it right… get it right, get it tight?

  24. comment number 24 by: J. David Levy

  25. comment number 25 by: Andre Carvalho

I just got your book and haven’t been able to put it down (except to write this comment of course!). The APC site looks great….I have a couple of pics from India that I have in mind for their service.

  26. comment number 26 by: Linda Laitner

Wow, they do great work at APC. I’ve had a few images converted to canvas and love the look–Canvas on Demand did mine. Would love to win the image, to go with your book, which I refer to over and over agian. Wonderful images!

  27. comment number 27 by: anita

Wow, David, …stunning! Tell RC you have answered the question, – photography is definitely art!

Read David’s book. Find vision. Let APC put it on canvas.

  28. comment number 28 by: JVL

I’ve had some canvases made by MPIX, and they’re pretty good – also had some done at Costco, which was cheaper, but a pain in the ass so for now I’m back to MPIX.

I’ve had a client re-use one of their images on canvases as a gift that they give to outgoing board members. Something different, relevant, and nice.

APC looks like they have some MUCH larger canvases than either of those other options, which is very cool.

  29. comment number 29 by: Tim

APC looks like a great place to try. I’ve always wanted todo one of my photos on canvas. Thanks for the contest.

  30. comment number 30 by: Martin

Gorgeous! I like giving gallery wraps as gifts. Peopel love them and they think they are way more expensive than they really are.

  31. comment number 31 by: Chris Casciano

I guess i don’t have any sob stories about my bare walls and dead husbands, but I will say hi to you on Sunday!

  32. comment number 32 by: jon west

I would love this pic on my wall but I’m so far away. I really like the colours and textures.

  33. comment number 33 by: Monica Frenden

This would look better in my house than in anyone else’s, fact!

  34. comment number 34 by: Seshu

    David

Huge fan of your work and your words, but let that not sway you in any way . The canvas you are giving away would not be for me but for my children. I want it to remind them of a few things that have defined their father – his need to explore the world and his passion to photograph people in their environment and narrate their stories . Thanks for the inspiration, David. See you on Sunday!

    Beautiful photo!

  36. comment number 36 by: Marsha

Serendipity caused me to find your incredible book while visiting in the Chicago area a couple of days ago. I literally started crying while reading it and looking at your amazing images. It is, by far, one of the best books I have ever read on photography, and I am spreading the word about it on photo sites I participate in.

I am thrilled also about the APC site you shared as I’m finally at the point where I would love to see some of my own images blown up on canvas, and I’ve recently moved into a home with lots of empty walls so would love to have the one your giving away for my “international” room. Reason is not just because it’s yours, but I’m REALLY into doors!

Can’t wait for your coming books, and I will be a devoted follower of your blog from here on out.

  37. comment number 37 by: Phillip

Pick me! Pick Me! I’ll proudly display it on my wall, it’ll be the centerpiece of home and possibly the first thing any visitor will see.

  38. comment number 38 by: Luc Novovitch

    David,
Looking at the picture of the print and the one on the cover of your (excellent) book shows how much you recopped the image for the cover. My 2 cents: I like the recrop better. Probably because in my previous life as a photographer for news agencies I learned the impact a recrop can make. On top of that, I don’t see life in a fixed rectangle frame… Question: is the top of the wall in real life as blue as it is on the canvas print. Just curious….

  39. comment number 39 by: Kurtis Walsh

You should pick me because I’ll save you the shipping. I’ll pick it up when I move to Vancouver at the start of July.

  40. comment number 40 by: Walter

Is there such a thing as lucky #38? Anyway, I LOVE the book, can’t wait for your next one. As far as APC goes, I have seen 16×20 canvases up close (not sure who the printer was), and I agree that they can be absolutely stunning. Your Tunisian image would look awesome in its place of honor in our house! ;-)

  41. comment number 41 by: Carl Licari

I have the perfect place to hang that canvas!
    Love the book.

  42. comment number 42 by: Shane

Found you through TWIP Podcast a few months ago and have been following the feed ever sense. Thanks for the link always looking for a great place to get my pictures printed from.

  43. comment number 43 by: Ryan

I’d love to be in the draw—nothing really unique to say other than that I am an admirer of your work and think the image is beautiful.

  44. comment number 44 by: Robert

I have a sketched picture of you on my wall, and this would go great next to it.

Awkward? Yes. True? Of course not, but I do like that canvas. ;)

  45. comment number 45 by: Suzy Walker

lol, I think you’ve caused too much of a rush at the APC site because it wouldnt load for me.

  46. comment number 46 by: Cathy

I’d love an opportunity to be in the drawing. I just received your book and am enjoying it. I’m finding a lot that I agree with and also plenty of food for thought, along with beautiful images.

  47. comment number 47 by: Kyle Burris

I’m not much for public banter, but i love the photo, and the book is changing the way i shoot

  48. comment number 48 by: Mike Mahaffey

Put me in… Put me in the drawing… Please my walls could use the color!

  51. comment number 51 by: Daniela

It’s my father on the photo!
To be honest I bought your book just because of the cover. I hadn’t read any reviews and I didn’t know about it, but I loved the cover and after flipping through, I bought it and I haven’t regretted it so far. Awesome work!

  52. comment number 52 by: Travis Jon Allison

    Thanks David.
I just finished the book last week and it was very inspirational!
Always good to see a Canadian making it GREAT.

First post! Wait, oh well, I hope I get the print anyhow; I also think I may need to get some of my stuff printed at APS.

  54. comment number 54 by: Doug Arlt

Your book is by far my favorite photography book. Whether or not I win I want to thank you for sharing your God-given talents. My pictures are already better thanks to what I have learned from you!

  55. comment number 55 by: Scott Coulter

Wow, that canvas looks great on your wall. I’ve been trying to figure out if any of my images are “good enough” yet for such a fancy treatment… maybe someday. APC looks like they have a great product at reasonable prices.

  56. comment number 56 by: Randall Fox

I’m really enjoying your blog and podcasts. Thanks for the link to APC as I have been giving some thought to having a couple of my images reproduced thru this process.

I would be thrilled to have the WTFrame cover canvas hanging in our home!

  62. comment number 62 by: Ray Rogers

Hi David thanks for the tip on APC, they look like a good service to have bookmarked. I think you should pick me for one of your beautiful prints because I live in Vancouver and would gladly pick it up from you so you don’t have to ship it….. :)

My daughter gave me your book for my birthday last week – thanks for writing such a great piece.

    Ray

  63. comment number 63 by: Tonya

    Hello David,

Your book is very inspiring. I picked it up in a bookstore, having never heard of you before though, sorry to say. I’m glad I picked it up, out of hundreds of other photography books. Yours is one of the best I’ve read–right up there with Freeman Patterson, in my opinion. I’m a beginner–and your philosophy of photography is wonderfully helpful. Thanks so much for your work.

    I’ll enter the contest too–

I’m loving your book! I think it applies to many areas of life not just photography. Especially love your images of Ladakh & Kashmir. I can’t seem to decide on art for my new home (after 6 mos. of residence), but I think a canvas of one of your photographs would look lovely in the dining room ;) .

  73. comment number 73 by: Justin Sperry

    David,
I’m actually waiting for your book to arrive but I’ve been following your blog, twittering, and podcasts for awhile.

You seem like you are a genuine person.

I have an entirely blank wall (brown) in my office, much the same color as the wall in the photo above, I really think that the canvas would have less stress and travel trauma if it were relocated to a similar surrounding.

I’m really trying to look out for the well-being of your work…

  74. comment number 74 by: Dylan Damian

You should pick me because otherwise I’ll be forced to frame and hang my copy of the book!

Thanks for the giveaway and for inspiring us.

  75. comment number 75 by: Paul Wirtz

I’ve only made one Canvas print so far. It was from a local Printer and they could only accept JPG.

I’m following @APCPro on twitter and will use them the next time I want a Canvas.

  76. comment number 76 by: Charles Pearce

I’m commenting because I like APC’s work, but I don’t expect to win the print because our family motto is: We never win anything. Feel free to prove the motto wrong.

  77. comment number 77 by: Julia Foster

I LOVE APC! I’ve seen some of their work, and it is excellent.

You should pick me because I think your picture is too beautiful not to have on my wall. :-)

I imagine that would look very nice in the living room of the house my wife and I are building. If I don’t win I just might have to see about getting one of our photos done as a gallery wrap – that’s a nice touch for placements where someone will see it from the side.

I used ImageKind to print a pic my mom liked on canvas for mom’s day. I didn’t know of other services at the time, and I didn’t have time to research. I don’t know what the canvas print ended up looking like, because it was shipped directly to my mom. She loves it though, thinks that the print on canvas really make the print shine. (Then again, she’s my mom, and I think it’s in her contract to say nice things.) I have a feeling that getting prints on canvas is somewhat addictive (or maybe I just find frames fussy) so it is nice to hear of another service, and one that gets such high reviews.

I hope I win because I love that print. And I think it would spark me to finish decorating. (2 years after moving in.)

  98. comment number 98 by: David Potts

Thanks alerting me to this company. I have marked them in my favorites and will use them soon. By the way I have been told WTF is coming my way for Father’s Day. I guess all the hints paid off.

And best of all, I’m not going to clutter up your blog with two meaningless comments just to get it there.

I think that like me, a lot of photographers enjoy and sometimes get more inspiration and motivation to create better work by the images of others. I know the perfecct spot for this one! Haha.

    Hi David,
I reckon you maybe overloaded the APC site.
I just checked it out and get the following message.

    “APC is undergoing maintenance.
We will be back online soon.”

    I’ll check back later

    Hey David
Would be great if you sent it down-under. I’d hang it on the bedroom wall then it would challenge to go out and find a matching duvet! Do APC print on fabric duvet size?

    Cheers

After our home addition we have nothing on the walls, clean slate and what better way to start off but with your canvas.

  112. comment number 112 by: Rosane Walker

That canvas looks gorgeous! I think you should pick me because it’s getting pretty humiliating to keep begging for free stuff here and not winning anything. :) Oh, and I’m moving to a new home soon and I’ll need to decorate my walls.

Well… what can I say… your a mentor to me. I’m really impressed with your book, with your writing… you’re breathtaking!
Oh, I almost forgot, I admire you so much that I have a picture of you in my wall! :D For all of this, I think I deserve the canvas.

Thanks for the APC recommendation. The canvas wraps always looked intriguing, and this is the motivation I need to try printing/hanging up some of my work at home.

Would gladly hang up your Tunisia photo if you pick me – not only a beautiful shot, but would be a daily reminder to go out and continue seeking and forming my own vision.

Thanks for being a virtual mentor!

Hey David, just found your work and blog through Corwin’s Creative Mix site – super stoked to see all the wonderful things you are up to!

Love the canvas – 10 years ago I was working at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, and made friends with a wonderful group of Tunisians living in Santa Fe – we would get together every weekend and speak french, eat, drink, sing and dance together. Your canvas reminds me of my awesome memories encompassing both photography and Tunisia! Beautiful work.

Hi David. Love the book – it has given me a new insight into the way I create pictures. Even since reading the first half of the book I think more about what to include within the frame and the message I hope the image will deliver. I will recommend WTF to my son who has just finished travelling in Morocco. Thailand & Laos and is about to start a design and photography major at Emily Carr, Vancouver. Keep up the great work.

    Choose me because:

    A) I’m a fellow Canadian (aka shipping is cheeeeeep)
    B) I’m an avid follower of your blog……naught you already have many of those (quality attracts quality)
    C) I have a funny Canadian email joke to share!

    >> *Subject:* HOW TO CALL THE POLICE (when you’re a senior)

HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU’RE A SENIOR

George Phillips of Ontario,Canada was going up to
bed, when his wife told him that he’d left the light on
in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom
window…. George opened the back door to go turn off the
light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked “Is someone in your
house?” He said “No.” Then they said
“All patrols were busy. You should lock your doors and
an officer will be along when one is available.”
George said, “Okay”. He hung up the phone and
    counted to 30.

Then he phoned the police again.

“Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there
were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don’t
have to worry about them now because I just shot them all”
    and hung up.

Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a
Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an
Ambulance showed up at the Phillips’ residence,
    and caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the Policemen said to George, “I thought you
    said that you shot them!”

George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!”

    Hi David,

Thanks for running another contest :) Now, as to the “why” in “why you should pick me”:

I have followed your blog for i can’t remember how long already. I got the WTF book for my birthday and was most excited of all to get it (even though i also got an iPhone 3Gs!) I follow you and your wife’s witty banter on twitter, and it makes me smile :) Although i first came to your blog for photography reasons, i am sticking around because i think basically you are just an all around good guy. :) And lastly, even though i never win anything, your contests still give me hope that someday i might! :) Have fun in NYC!

  137. comment number 137 by: Els

    oh…and, wOOt!

  138. comment number 138 by: Robert Jaudon

    David,

First…Thanks for the offer and the drawing. That would be sweet to have one of your prints hanging on the wall….take about inspiration!!!

Why me??? Well I found you originally when I was researching a backup strategy. I have watched your video cast of your backup workflow and although I have not gone to the lengths you have, I now have a solid backup implementation and I don’t have the fear of losing images. Since I have found you your blog has been a daily visit and the thing I like most is your willingness to give back, not to mention your wonderful images. One day I hope to attend a seminar and soak up some of your vision and knowledge.

Thanks again for all you do….

Yay contest time. Of course you should pick me because the blue color of the windows on the canvas is pretty much the complementary color to my painted walls. That´s a sign ;-)

    Greetings from Bavaria

You should pick me because I promise to brag about you endlessly when people come over saying that guy has my life and is soooo cool, i met him you know? and he’s like famous, and smart!!! Like yeah! And never mind it looking great with my home decor, i would repaint my whole house just to match the brilliance of your photographic skills…. (how my doing so far haha) and of course it would be very patriotic of you to give it away to a Canadian on Canada Day and i live so close the shipping would be pennies! Heck ill even hop the ferry and buy ya a round two of soup just to pick it up!

So when it comes down to it, i think there is little logic left but to give it to me! YAY! :D

Have a great time in NYC!!!!

  142. comment number 142 by: Kati Debelic

Hey David, congrats on your book. went to chapters last week and saw it there, leafed through it and captivated me. Unfortunately my budget is limited to food and a roof under my head, but maybe I will be the lucky recipient of a brand new book and / or (greedy I am ) a lovely stretched canvas. BTW I checked out the APC website and am quite impressed by their product and if you say so too, I will likely use them when I get the dough to do so!!!

Enjoy NYC, say hi to Mc Nally and tell him I am available to assist ;-) especially for his tour in the carribean but not limited to.

Make sur you let us know Vancouverites when you will have a speakung engagement in town!

    Cheers, K

    Hi David:
I have thoroughly enjoyed learning from your book WTF. The examples and images are excellent and appeal to my phototravel spirit. Only regret that I did not read this before going to India and China in 2008 (wasn’t published).
Would love to have the canvas version of the photo on the cover of WTF as it would be a great inspiration to me and all who see it at my home.

Bought the book, even moved it’s location in Chapters to make it more visible. The image evokes great memories of my one and only trip to Tunisia when I was 13. Also I have minimal art on my own walls, and this would be a beautiful addition.

Oh, and *Pick me!* *pick me!* :)

  147. comment number 147 by: Timothy Calderwood

I believe Scott Kelby mentioned you book at a recent D&D seminar in D.C. The Amazon.com reviews were great. Yesterday I got a 40% off Father’s Day email coupon from Borders. They had the book in stock and I treated myself to a Father’s Day present. While my wife slept in this morning, I tackled the book with highlighter in hand. Had to go slow and reflect on your inspirational message of vision. This is changing my thinking in a VERY positive way. Thanks–even if I don’t get one of the prints, you’ve already blessed me richly!

  148. comment number 148 by: Tanguy G.

Me… because it reminds me of a photo I took in Algeria. Because your photos are about places/countries I have strong memories of…

I came across your blog after reading a review of your book by one of my photojournalist colleagues (http://tinyurl.com/l3unuf). I’ve got his blog bookmarked, and now I’m adding yours! I’d love to have the canvas too …

  150. comment number 150 by: David Vernon

Holy smokes David – 149 comments – I have no chance at being the random winner this month. Your popularity is increasingly making it impossible to win your free stuff and this … disappoints me. Good for you I suppose. Hmmmph. On the other hand I do love me a canvas print so if the random gods like irony, they can choose me after this little mini diatribe. Choose me indeed. Oh – and did McNally order for dinner? Was he a pig?

    Hey David!
As I read through some of these comments, I realized that, in all honesty, I am probably much LESS deserving of this beautiful print/canvas than many of your readers. I started following you after a #followfriday tweet through NAPP (or maybe Scott Bourne) a month or two ago but I have since read some of your articles and blog posts as well as the interview on Photofocus and the better I get to know you the more I like you! Within The Frame is actually on its way to me as I write this comment! Thanks for doing what you do!

Oh yeah, APC looks like they have a great service, too.

I look forward to hanging this canvas over the fireplace.

I am currently volunteering as an English teacher in Kazakhstan, but home for the summer. I love making travel photos for myself and to share my experience with others. Most of the places I’ve traveled to are obscure and unknown to most people and I try to help them see the heart of the people and places I go to.

I read most of your book while sitting in Borders tonight and then came straight home and got on your website. Vision is something I feel like I’m continually trying to identify and develop and your book was very motivating.

I will definitely consider using APC for gifting photos in the future, too.

    Thanks for sharing your heart!

Throwing my digital hat in the ring. Love your blog, the “Oh Sh*t Bag” really resonated with me. My wife and I shot weddings for 20+ years and our “Murphy Kit” was a life saver. Most used item?
