Saturday PhotoWalk in Vancouver
July 19th, 2009We had a fantastic time this Saturday evening as 50 photogs descended on Vancouver’s beautiful English Bay. We met at the historic Sylvia hotel in perfect weather and walked the seawall to Third Beach. At Third Beach we had three great models, Anna, Elycia, and Joel ready for the photowalkers, along with a bunch of lighting gear, speedlights, lastolite panels, and more Pocket Wizards than you could shake a stick at. As the sun went down we spent a couple hours on the beach and everyone had chances to shoot and play. My partner in crime was DAVE DELNEA and he deserves a big pat on the back for taking my “Hey, I have an idea…” and making it happen. I got the glory as the walk leader, but Dave Delnea was every bit as much a leader and was really generous with his time and knowledge. Dave’s an excellent photographer, if you don’t know his work you should see it HERE. He’s blogging now too, HERE.
Thanks to those that came and walked with us and indulged the lunacy of a guerilla lighting workshop on the beach. I shot video and stills so I could put together a video for our walk – which you can get by clicking HERE or clicking the embedded YouTube video below - so I didn’t shoot much until we got to the beach, but HERE’s a link to a very small Flash gallery of images from my time behind the lens. That low POV you see is a result of me spending a lot of time in the water in my clothes, but it was worth it.
Walkers, don’t forget to get images submitted before the 25th of July through the Photowalk website.

It certainly looks like you had tons of fun. Awesome shots too! Are you planning to write David’s version of the Hot Shoe Diaries
?
Nice work. Wish I had have thought about bringing a couple of models to the Taipei walk.
Thanks Younes but my version of the HSD would be a very short book indeed. I’ll stick to what I know.
[...] – it looks like Scott is posting links to Photo Walk videos on his website – including one from David duChemin (yeah – it looks like David pulled out all the stops – how cool is [...]
great video David, it does looks like fun was had by all.
Brilliant idea of having a guerrila lighting session- and great images.
How about a post explaining the lighting setup and how you took the images.
It’s so great to see your video of the walk. 50 people? How do you walk with 50 people?? Looks like it was a great experience. I should register next year.

This takes the photowalk idea up to a next level. Awesome!
Great video – love the B&W- and very beautiful images!! Must have been really great to participate!
Great shots. The shallow DOF looks awesome.
Definitely raising the bar for other cities. Looks like a lot of fun and too bad I couldn’t attend again this year.
Raising the bar indeed! That looks awesome and like a lot of fun. Who else is going to Vancouver for next year’s walk?
Thank you David for putting this together. You and Dave definitely took things to another level – I had a blast. I’m sure you’ve inspired future potential walk leaders to go bigger and better next year!
Haven’t peeped the vid yet (youtube blocked at work) but I gotta say, your portraiture is amazing! McNally should be afraid…very afraid…
The walk was a great experience as was the location, models, gear, ect. I need to get down to English Bay more often to shoot. It is such a vibrant and beautiful place.
great shots, and indeed, raising the bar on how to do photowalks!
Fantastic video and great shots, David!
Heck David I’m not going to lead a photo walk next year. I am going to come with you and shoot me some pretty models
Well done.
Thanks all. @MIke – I don’t think Joe’s got much to worry about from me. But when the day comes I’ll happily let him carry my gear and hold the umbrella – he’s a great guy, would be fun to have him around to troubleshoot.
@ScottBourne – You’re welcome anytime, man. Though I gotta tell you I’m already nervous about the expectations! Next year we’ll be using helicopters, stunts, a tiger, and the cast of LOST.
Wow! Great idea, incorporating a lighting workshop (with models, and lighting gear) at a Photowalk. You have opened a pandora’s box. Now, everyone is gonna want to do this. Next year it will be called the Worldwide Photoworkshop.

Holy crap!! David, you da man. I’m flying to Vancouver next year to shoot with you guys!
Oh, and much love to David Delnea too. I checked out his site and it’s very inspiring. Beautiful work David!
Yeah – but did you get the rights to the music track???
Oh, I so wish, I lived closer! This Photo Walk sounds so much better than the “ordinary” walk I went to… Can you please lead a walk in Germany next year?

Ok – comment retracted about the music credits
BTW – Would anyone be interested in a Photo Walk in Sequoia or King’s Canyon National Park in Central California? Maybe we could coax David down here? (unsubtle hint)
The photos look AWESOME!
Looks like you had a splendid time, guys. Can only envy
What, the guy didn’t make it into your gallery shots? C’mon…

Kudos to you for sharing your skills with other photogs. I, too, participated in the 2009 WWPW in Paso Robles, CA (hosted by Syl Arena) and invited some models to show up after our walk concluded.
David, absolutely amazing photos! The lighting is awesome! Now, can you share with us what you did with the lighting and post processing???
