Neon In Your Neighborhood Contest
September 2nd, 2009![]()
Ok, this is so cool I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am. However, it’ll probably only be cool to you if you’re going to Photoshop World in Vegas in a month. My publisher, Peachpit Press has just announced the Neon In Your Neighborhood Contest and it goes like this: you submit ONE image of neon in your neighborhood and Chris Orwig and I will pick a handful of winners to come with us, at our expense (OK, Peachpit’s footing the bill, I just want to look magnanimous), to the Neon Boneyard in Vegas. It’ll be an early morning, but the winners will get on a charter bus at 6:30 and take the short trip to the Boneyard, where Vegas neon goes to die. I know! Cool, right?
But wait! There’s more!
Not only will you be hosted by Chris Orwig, author of the just-released Visual Poetry, and me, but we’ve also invited some other Peachpit authors, so you’ll be hanging with a small group and chilling with people like Matt Kloskowski, Jeff Revell, Russell Brown, Rick McLeary, and anyone else we can rustle up. Probably be some prizes, for all I know (and I don’t – but it wouldn’t suprise me.)
So go to the Peachpit Neon In Your Neighborhood page, read the rules, and enter ASAP. Time’s a tickin’.
On a related note. Chris Orwig’s book Visual Poetry is a really lovely book. It’s beside me right now and I’m thoroughly enjoying reading it. I keep thinking what a great complement this book is to Within The Frame, and wondering if Chris and I are brothers separated at birth. I’ll be reviewing Visual Poetry once I’m done it, but this is a busy time and I head to India in a week so if you, like me, are the kind to throw caution to the wind, or run with scissors, and are willing to buy a book without reading the reviews – you might want to get a copy now. I can’t wait to hang out with Chris, he just seems like a real kindred spirit. Check it out here on Amazon:
Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs
So while we’re talking PSW, I’ll be there. So will Matt Brandon. Who else is coming? Drop me a comment if you’ll be there, and for gosh-sakes make sure you come and say hi when we’re all there. One month! Woohoo!

Totally cool contest!

I’m reading Within the Frame now and I would really like to get my hands on Visual Poetry too. I doubt there’s really any need for any other photography books, although the Tao of Photography – a Chris Orwig recommendation – has just arrived via Bookmooch.
D – sounds cool…your shot is a great one in the neighborhood…i like the challenge!
i still need to get my hands on WTF!!
Cheers!
Sounds cool, but not for me, as I am not going to LV :/ But I still will check my neighborhood for neon
I remember that sign… love how you captured it.
Alas, no LV for me. India will have to be enough
I actually just ordered Chris’s book a few minutes before reading this (and pre-ordered your 2nd one). Looking forward to reading both.
Sara over at PeachPit talked us into putting up a Double for the winner, so there will be some blackrapid swag involved with this little endeavor.
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!
I am sure your group will enjoy the boneyard. I have been involved with them since their inception and the company I work for donated many of the signs that reside there.
I would happily volunteer to meet your group there and add my knowledge of the pieces to that of the fine people at the Neon Museum. Also, if time allows and there is any interest, a tour of our sign shop to see how neon and hot art glass is made, can be arranged. If not, please enjoy the hospitality of our city and the history behind it.

AAAaargh! I just read the rules. I don’t like this rule:
2) You must be a Photoshop World Las Vegas 2009 Attendee
I am not a pro shooter so therefore, I don’t make tons of cash or have photo income to get write offs. $600 + Flights + Hotels= One nice lens. Everybody wants in my wallet… and I am sick of it. I am viewed as a consumer(of gear and workshops) not as a person, a photographer, who wants to improve image quality.
My shots will not be entered as I am economically discriminated.
