Official Release of DRAWING THE EYE eBook

October 21st, 2009

Drawing-the-eye2DRAWING THE EYE – Creating Stronger Images Through Visual Mass is the third eBook in the series. It’s about understanding and using the ways in which the eye reads a photograph in order to create more powerful images, and it’ll change the way you look at your craft. Broken into 4 parts, Drawing The Eye looks at this concept of visual mass, or visual pull, in concept, in camera, in post-processing, and then through creative exercises related to each of these sections.

Don’t let the egghead title fool you, this is not academia; it’s a real-world discussion about making images that are more powerful because they’re made with a fuller understanding of where the eye moves in an image, and how that understanding can change the way you shoot and process your images.

Like TEN and TEN MORE, DRAWING THE EYE is a 32-page downloadable eBook, in PDF format, and it’s available now for $5. We began selling these for $5 as introductory pricing, and were planning to make the usual pricing $10 but as long as you keep giving me such positive feedback and telling the world about them, I think we’ll just keep them at $5, if that’s cool with you. We’ve switched e-commerce engines too. So many people experienced issues with Lulu that we’re now using the much more reliable E-Junkie, so the whole experience ought to be easy.

You can order it right here, right now with the buttons below, or head over to the bookstore section of the site.

Man – with those e-books I pay for content and not for mostly advertisements like in (almost) all the printed magazines.
Well made and a lot off stuff to internalize – thx.

All three of the e-books are superb. I’m looking forward to seeing a few more in the future.

    Hi, David
Congratulations with your Drawing the eye. This book was very instructive again. I loved Within the frame. I’m a starting photographer from Holland. I,ve read With in the frame when I was traveling through Indonesia It was inspiring!

Wow, David. Thanks for another amazing book. In the last three months with WTF, the WTF podcast series, and now the ebooks, I have learned exponentially more than I ever have before.

@Keith, ssherstone, Markus, Paul, Ronald – Thank you!

@Dan – No, sorry, no Lulu.com loving on this one. So many people had so many issues that I’ve abandoned them.

@Anita – Well, you’re welcome! Just let take a breather sometime in the next 6 months, I’m tired! :-)

Really, it’s so encouraging to know people are making use of these and finding them helpful – thanks for the encouragement and the interaction on the blog. Community means a great deal to me, so thanks for being part of it.

    David,

Great EBook but I have one question. How do I re-download it if I “ACCIDENTLY” delete the file?

Am I missing some kind of login?

Ten and Ten more are great books but I think you should read this one first – It changed my way of thinking when taking a photo and processing it. It is an easy concept that one need to digest and it creates a new challenge with every photo you take. Ten and Ten more show different ways of putting this concept into practice. Well done and well worth the money.

If the first two books were anything to go by, this should be great. I’ve just downloaded it.

I’m using the new Copy and Paste function in Snow Leopard’s Preview to copy the Creative Exercises and print them out. I’ve put the printed sheet in my photo bag to carry around with me so that I can try them out when I go out with my camera.

A great concept, Visual Mass, well presented and explained and something that has me re-evaluating my recent shots and pre-evaluating my future ones. Thanks for it all!

Thanks David. An excellent resource. The first time I read it I didn’t like it. I felt like it just cluttered up my mind with more ideas and confused what I’d already learnt about composition with unnecessary information.

Then I went out shooting the next day and found myself thinking in terms of “visual mass” without realising.

It occured to me that it was an excellent way of assessing my shots as I worked and found myself improving on shots I might otherwise have just accepted. Wow. :-)

This made me re-read your ebook and 2nd time around I’ve found it extremely helpful and to the point. An excellent book, very helpful, deceptively simple and effective.

A job bloody well done David. Thanks.

Thanks again David. Can’t wait to read and apply to my craft. You should really take a vacation now. :-)

David, thank you so much for the resources and inspiration that are your ebooks. I just read through “Drawing The Eye” last night (and read both “Ten” and “Ten More” over the weekend), they were amazing! Your photography and writing are a gift to so many. Thank you for bringing such a well spoken and respected voice to the subject of expression. There are so many gifted and knowledgable voices teaching and sharing techniques, and while I would definitely welcome any words of wisdom you have on those subjects, I am so much more thankful that you take the time to emphasize the art and heart of it all. You truly are an inspiration and encouragement. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Oh, one more quick thought… is it possible to add comments/reviews to the bookstore page? I think it’d be great for people to have a place to share thoughts and reactions to the ebooks and help convince those who are teetering back and forth to go ahead and take the plunge (gotta say… it doesn’t seem like $5 is much of a plunge these days). Anyway, just an idea.

I’d buy all three, but I’m stationed overseas with an APO billing address and PayPal does not have USPS APO address options.

A heads up to anyone thinking about purchasing these e-books from David duChemin.
I purchased the 3 books promoted by Digital Photography School, “10 ways”, 10 more ways” & “Drawing the Eye” on 30.October (2 days ago). The link to download the books never came after the purchase as it should have.
I contacted David duChemin immediately by email regarding the problem and to his credit he responded quickly and forwarded (only) the “Drawing the Eye” book in his reply. I sent a response straight away asking for the other 2 books I purchased and included a copy of my purchase receipt to validate the purchase. Now it’s 2 days later, 1.November and have yet yet to receive the books or a reply from David duChemin.

Rik – I immediately replied to the first email and as far as I can tell did not get a second. If you did not get this email, just email me, Rik. My email and my phone number are clearly marked on my site and you are welcome to call it anytime if there is an issue. I have had very few issues with the e-commerce part of this this site, and on occasion when I have it has been resolved within hours, if not minutes.

I appreciate you alerting my readers and potential clients, but making sure you connect with me is the fastest way to resolve this and get your ebooks.

Your first email to me reads: I made a purchase as well and am unable to find where to download it from. Someone….anyone?

I replied with: On purchase you get an email with the download link. If your current email differs from the email Paypal has on file for you, you might not have received it. If you still have no email with a download links please let me know and I’ll help resolve it for you.

I have no record of further emails, so clearly we’ve been mis-firing on the emails. (instructions attached for download of missing ebooks)
