CHASING THE LOOK, New eBook

November 9th, 2009

The fourth in my series of ebooks is now out. CHASING THE LOOK, 10 Ways To Improve The Aesthetics of Your Photographs is a little longer than the last few. I think of this one as a companion to DRAWING THE EYE, as both titles are about improving our images through a better understanding of the visual language of photography. CHASING THE LOOK is about making intentional choices about the use of our gear and the settings on our cameras based on their affect on the aesthetic of the image. It begins to answer the question we all ask at some point while looking at the images of others – “How come my photographs don’t look like that?”

This one accidentally got to 48 pages. I’m not known for brevity. But I like to think that’s a good thing. It’s broken into ten sections, and like the previous ebooks, there are creative exercises, though not for every topic. It’s still gorgeously laid out, and at only $5 I like to think these eBooks are still one of the best values out there.

Congratulations on the new e-book. I’ve added my own thoughts to the comments posted by Scott Bourne over at PhotoFocus on your ’10 ways’ principles. Thought I’d write it before sampling the books that started this web conversation.

I’m wondering whether the pictures contain EXIF data. It was missing from your 3rd book. Don’t get me wrong … i loved it (along with first two) but I like seeing EXIF data :)

    I’ll buy two!

And I also like seeing exif data – if for nothing else, it tells me that “you’ve got the gear – go find your vision”

    David,

Congratulations on another excellent book. I think your work is inspirational and by far the best out there.

I’ve also have just finished Within The Frame, which I would rate as the No.1 photography book for 2009.

Thanks for all you do here.

I just finished the second e-book, have the third queued up, now the fourth. I can safely say I will keep buying as long as you keep publishing! Thank you for all you share and do.

I live in Ukraine and cannot use my credit card through pay pal. Is there any other way to purchase your e books? I bought “Ten” through Hulu without any problems. Are the other books available there too? Thanks.

A huge fan of all your publications, David. Not only what you write about but how you write it. Thank you!

I’d ask you to slow down on pumping these things out (sounds like I’m getting my “wish” on that side) but I’d rather archive your brain now when it’s young (ish) and nimble, and then reflect on all of this later.
Additionally my “cult fan” status has fallen, I am not all the way through 10 more, and am still nibbling my way through WTF. Vision Mongers is on the Christmas list, so that should give me some time to get caught up on my duChemin reading list…

Downloaded it last night and will read it today. If it’s as good as your first three books, you already have a winner!

I’m reading through it now and its safe to say you are as talented behind the keyboard as you are behind the lens! You have a great writing voice and a unique and easy-to-grasp way of expressing artistic values that make it hard to stop reading!

I haven’t even made it through all of your podcasts and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this and a couple of your other books. I really enjoy the WTF podcasts and I look forward to reading (and re-reading) these.

David, another great e-book. I was checking out the online version of Shutterbug Magazine and I was happy to see that Within The Frame is featured in their Best of 2009 Photography Books . Congratulations!

I love your ebooks, thanks for taking the time to share your love of photography. I just have one comment. I noticed that all of your ebooks except for your most recent one, CHASING THE LOOK, don’t display adjacent pages correctly in adobe acrobat reader. Your latest ebook handles this correctly by displaying the front cover and back pages individually, but then switches to two pages side-by-side when displaying all the other content. When the pages aren’t correctly displayed adjacent to each other it is difficult to really appreciate your beautiful images and expert page layouts. Just a friendly heads-up.

Thanks again for sharing your insights,
    Nick Pauly

Exciting! Going to make for some good reading this weekend :) Absolutely loved WTF and the other 3 ebooks. I just wish Paypal in India would work properly so I could buy these without having to borrow my mom’s credit card (but that’s not an issue with you, just with Paypal)
@Nick Pauly – the 3 ebooks look fine for me in two-page view in both Adobe Acrobat (haven’t tried it in Adobe Reader) and Apple Preview. Make sure you have the “View cover page during two-up” option checked.

Thanks so much for all your e-books. I’m recovering from breast cancer surgery and they were a welcome distraction this past week. I can’t wait to be able to get out and try some of these techniques before my treatments begin. It’s good to see there are a lot that I can try in-house as well. Awesome information, thanks!

I had some time to read the book finally.
It was a very-very wisely spent 5$. I liked the previous ones as well, but this is in my view the most inspiring.

Hi: Just discovered your blog a month or so ago.
I have since downloaded six of your ebooks. And can honestly say that after over 50 years of practicing how, reading about and capturing images I have finally found someone in the photographic world with whom I can really connect . (Although Darwin Wiggett rates way up there too;>))
I read “Vision is Better” while on a week long shoot in the Blue Ridge Parkway area of Virginia and North Carolina. I digested part of the book each evening and awoke the next morning with fresh inspiration. I certainly can’t claim that all or even any of my images taken each day were winners. But the percentage that were more than acceptable was clearly much higher and the renewed confidence that I am on the right track has kept me going every day since. Regards and thanks, Dick K.

Hi Dick – Thanks for this encouragement. I can’t tell you how amazing it is to be part of a growing community of folks who think and feel along similar lines. I’m grateful that the stuff I write makes a difference; thanks for taking a moment to drop a line.
