Just Released: The Inspired Eye II

January 21st, 2010

The Inspired Eye, Notes on Creativity for Photographers, Vol I has been one of the most well-received eBooks we’ve put out. When I first wrote it I had in mind a second volume. Hence the clever business about it being Volume I. Well the sequel is now here and while I toyed with calling it The Inspired Eye 2, Revenge of the Muse, or something dramatic, I took the high road.

The Inspired Eye II picks up where the first one ended and is a further exploration of the creative process. 32 pages long, it’s illustrated with my first film images in over 10 years, themselves part of my own pursuit of the creative process.

If you’ve been wanting to begin the New Year by jumping some creative ruts, then this is a great place to begin.

I am releasing this today, January 22, and for the first 2 days – Jan 22 and 23 – am offering two discounts.

The discount code inspired4 will allow you to buy the book for $4 instead of the usual $5.

The discount code inspired25 will allow you to buy 4 or more books from the Craft & Vision Store for 25% off.

Only one coupon can be used at once, so choose wisely. Buy the whole set or just buy the ones you don’t have, but both these codes will expire at 1am PST on January 24th. You can buy the book at the bottom of this page, but if you want more you’ll find the full collection at CraftAndVision.com.

I’m launching this only 24 hours after my return from Kenya. While there I spent time at a little school just outside of the Massai Mara National Park. Their biggest need was a new wing with a couple new classrooms, and the first 1000 sales of this eBook will pay for that. Just thought you should know that you’re part of something bigger :-) Thanks again for all your support of these crazy plans of mine.

This is a 32-page downloadable eBook in Adobe PDF format.

Great! Got my copy! Love the images in this book alone, and the layout, the content is anticipated to be as good as usual. Looking forward to reading it this weekend as part of my R&R.

Purchase completed. Sure hope I’m with the first 1000 buyers – to become inspired and contribute to a new school wing in Kenya at the same time would be just incredible :-)

You seriously, seriously, seriously need to go over to the Pragmatic Programmer http://www.pragprog.com and order a copy of “Pragmatic Thinking and Learning”. You can get it at Amazon too, but you can order a PDF of the book from pragprog.com.

The book approaches thinking and learning from an engineer’s viewpoint. It talks a lot about how we learn and how are brains are wired. But for me the biggest take away was how creativity works.

Right brain and left brain modes are mentioned and why l-mode and r-mode are better names. But I call them my ADD side and my wife side. My wife side looks at an idea, rolls it’s eyes, and says, “That is silly. What were you thinking? You are an idiot.” My ADD side says, “Hey! Sweet! Let’s do it!” Creativity often means ignoring your wife side and letting your ADD side run amok. Then when the dust settles letting the wife side say, “Well, that was a good idea.” Or, letting the ADD side say, “Oops, I guess that didn’t work. Oooo, look, a butterfly!”

Got my copy and read that you are going to donate the first 1000 copy revenue to charity, that’s so great. Thank you.

David, thanks for doing this, you are one of the most inspiring photographers out there. Very happy to contribute to the school in Kenya and get inspired at the same time. Looking forward to reading the 4 I bought.

I like this $5 book idea of yours, affordable and stimulating.
I have just experimented by putting the latest on my kindle [a travellers best friend apart from Ipod/Iphone] however the text on the PDF is just too small to read comfortably, and can’t seeto magnify it like a normal PDF reader.
    Anyone have solution?
    Clive

Mihalis, go ahead and print the book and enjoy it printed. Just please don’t distribute copies or sell them, of course. :)

This ebook is not listed in the main store. I wanted to buy all the books, but can’t. Any remedy???

  18. comment number 18 by: David

@John – Not sure what you mean, they’re definitely all there. Perhaps refresh your browser?

    David-
Thanks for the ebooks and your example. I’ve been shooting some 120 with a Mamiya C33 pro I found on eBay. Great fun but I hate paying for prints that end up crappy. Can you explain your film workflow a bit? Do you get negatives at the lab and scan them then switch to positives with photoshop? What scanner?
I know this is gear question, but it’s really more of a workflow question:)
Thanks for any answer you have time to give.

David, were you in Sekenani? My daughter and her family are missionaries there (the green roofs on the hill). My son-in-law is doing construction for the school and provided water for the village during the drought this past fall.

My DH bought me your other 4 ebooks for an anniversary present this year (with only a little hint!). He even promised to work through the excercises with me. We’ve just rounded out the collection with both volumes of The Inspired Eye. I’m looking forward to some downtime tomorrow to read them through, cover to cover! Keep up the amazing work David :)

I think 1$ is more then enough for one book…
for 6 of your ebooks it’s 30$ & I prefer to use them for a full book.

I don’t know why I waited a whole day to buy this. Thanks again David

thanks again for all this good stuff you put out for us.

Thanks to all of you for such an overwhelming response! I’m running a bit ragged right now between back-to-back Africa trips and I haven’t taken the time to properly thank you. Your support on this stuff is deeply gratifying, and in this case allows me to partner with some pretty amazing people – you – to do something bigger than ourselves, and that humbles me. I’m hoping to do a bit of a story on this school, just as soon as I get some images. I wasn’t shooting the day we were there. I was engaged in listening, a rare thing for me :-)

Thanks again. Please spread the love about these ebooks. Tell the world. My dream is to one day sustain myself entirely from their sales, which would free me to pursue more pro-bono work and more opportunities to serve communities like the one we’re helping now in Kenya.

David- though it’s been said before (and probably much better than I can) thank you for your wonderful books. Thank you even more for your generous spirit in donating the proceeds to help those in needs. Your words, your pictures and your actions have been an inspiration to me and so many others. -Jeremy

Finally got around to reading it last night. Very nice interview with Chris Orwig. What I appreciate most is the way that you understand that photography is an integral part of ones life, not something apart from life. I think that it is important to learn our craft. However, beyond that, it is as we deepen and grow as compassionate human beings that we become photographers with substance.

    David.
Thank you so much for publishing these. My eye is much more inspired, without spending money on gear, largely because of you. I took a photograph last weekend in Hyde Park that I spent about 10 minutes setting up, getting my angle right, the background, looking and thinking…click. The National Geo photographers don’t have to look over their shoulders for me, but I’m *a lot* further along this journey than I was at the start of 2009. Thank you.
