The Print & The Process – SAFARI
July 6th, 2010![]()
Last January I spent 10 days on safari in Kenya. The second in our series, The Print & The Process, this Safari monograph is the work that came out of that trip. Like the first Print & Process book, VENICE, this one is split between the images themselves and then a long discussion about the lessons learned, gear used, and techniques I played with, including the duo-tone settings I used to create the toned images. I’ve also included a link so you can download the Lightroom preset for that split-tone look.
SAFARI is not really a book about how to shoot a safari, though you’ll certainly learn that kind of thing as well. It’s more like a “Here’s what I learned about photography while shooting a safari.” Every discipline has something to teach others, and my photography improved by having this experience. Join me as I unpack these images and the process that got me to making them.
We created this series as a way to show work and to have an honest discussion about the issues connected to the creation of that work. Some, like VENICE, will be more introspective, and some, like SAFARI, have a more balanced mix of the artsy fartsy stuff as well as a discussion of the gear I used and why.

I know I’ve been cranking these out like a mad man, but it won’t be long before I’m off to Iceland then Maui, and on to India, Thailand, Nepal, New Zealand and possibly Africa all before December, so I’m making hay while the sun shines. We’ve still got a great line-up coming, including the 3rd in Andrew Gibson’s fantastic The Magic of Black & White series and Eli Reinholdtsen’s Chasing Reflections which is likely to become my own personal favourite in the whole collection. And we’ve got the new website to launch soon, and an iPad giveaway to celebrate, so stay tuned!

That’s a ton of traveling. The books have been great and I can’t wait to read this one.
AWESOME! Congrats on the release. Downloading at the moment
Fantastic! Just bought my copy.
David: Hey I have to say this, everytime i try and use the discount code it gives me an error message. It says i have to have 5 things in my cart before i can get the discount (SAFARI20).
This happened to me on the last eBook but didn’t bother with saying anything and just paid the full price for it (cause i really wanted it ASAP! jaja).
Anyways, might want to check into it, as i don’t know if it’s just me or it’s happening to others as well. Not really a big deal to me man because at $5 a pop, I buy everyone you come out with pretty much, cause there are flat out awesome eBooks and worht every penny of them (and more).
Keep up the good work on them. One suggestion or request though: Can we get a detailed, techincal eBook sometime on how you do things in the post-processing. and I mean a real detailed eBook. It’s something that lacks out there for the most part i think. Looking forward to seeing the Lightroom plugin’s on this one (and yeah i just bough it at $5 cause I can’t wait again!! hahaha).
T-roy, you need to use the code SAFARI4 if you wish to only purchase the Safari eBook for $4.
SAFARI20 is the code to use when you want to buy 5 or more books.
thank you for this book david. doing a photography safari is high on my list and this will give me some excellent preparation.
– maybe next time?
enjoy all your travels – shame you were not able to fit in a quick workshop in sydney
Thanks again for your work and sharing your insights…
I love the book David – brings it all back and also reminds me about slowing down. I was certainly one of the “OH MY GOSH, IT’S
A LION!” crowd and I took mediocre photos – not great art but great memories. Thanks for doing this book.
I haven’t yet purchased any of the e-books. This will be my first. Thanks.
I enjoyed VENICE and now looking forward to reading through this one too! Thanks for sharing and for all your hard work you do to help others. It is greatly appreciated.
Loved the pictures, they’re getting my juices flowing for my Kenyan safari this October. I can’t wait to read the words this evening.
(In the introduction you say January 2009 for the safari, everywhere else it’s January this year.)
Brian – good eye! It was January 2010, but anyone who knows me at all knows I am lousy with numbers. Oops!
And when do you relax?
David, when are you coming to San Francisco or Berkeley? I’d like to see you at the Berkeley Camera Club. My 2 cents: When you go to India, keep the color this time (rather than monotone or duotone). I know it’s cliched, but India without color is like a safari without wild animals. BTW, Eli Reinholdtsen rocks!
Brilliant! I’ve been meaning to purchase four of the Craft & Vision eBooks for a while now, so with the discount as an incentive, I just bought eight! I’m really excited to have some fantastic reading material for this weekend. Thanks so much!
Hooray! I just missed the last discount code so I am excited that you’ve released another e-book so soon. I’m off to purchase my 5+ books now.
David!! Brilliant!! I love it! I really do! Just purchased my copy now!!
Oh dear, I just bought them all.
Just a few observation as I was going through the ordering process:
- Under the description for “Growing the VisionMonger…”, there’s a typo in the sentence that reads, “Whether your running a studio business…” (s/b you’re).
- Vision in Motion description does not have a page count.
- It’d be great if you could add a list where customers could check off the books to put in their cart rather than adding them one at a time. Also an “add all” button would be helpful – and might result in more sales too!
Can’t wait to dive into the e-books!
Looking forward to diving into this book.
(And gosh thank you Ron)
David,
loved the book. I especially liked the long exposure work you included. As a photographer that shoots more nature/landscapes, it was nice to see and read about your vision related to those subjects.

I got the venice e-Book and put it on my iPad to read during a flight. What a great ebook. I’m even more excited for this e-Book I uploaded it on my iPad and ready to read!
Hey David,
I hear you’re leading another photo safari in January 2011 to Kenya?! Can you share the details!
David, I had unfortunately just finished reading your VisionMongers book. I say unfortunately because I so enjoyed reading it that I did not want it end. Your writing style coupled with the wisdom you share is extremely refreshing. I was therefore very excited to learn of your Craft & Vision series of ebooks. Wow!, a whole bucket full of books to read. Now that I’m halfway through, I think I’m qualified to recommend your books to everyone. So don’t hesitate to buy these ebooks. They are worth every cent and more.
David, thank you for sharing your vision and wisdom. You have instilled a new type passion into my photography. I am so excited to take photos again.
Love the book. It brings back such wonderful memories. How nice of you to include the Lightroom preset. I used it on a couple of my Kenya images

Thanks Anita. I was going to post that and just never got to it. So when can we see you on one of these?
Thanks David for this e-book, and the bonus LR preset. The photos are fantastic. I’m heading back for my second visit to Africa in a few weeks time which includes a photographic safari near the Chobe River. So from my point of view, the timing of the release of this e-book is perfect! Lots & lots of inspiration (and just a little hope that I can come back with at least a few photos of this callibre).
I would love to go on a photographic safari, …reading this ebook intensifies that! I don’t know, though, I’m not a very adventurous eater. I’ve listened to the “Depth of Field” podcast interviews that you and Ami Vitale did with Matt Brandon. I can’t help but cringe when I hear about some of the things you eat along the way. Can someone go on a photographic adventure with a bag full of Power Bars?
This might just be my favorite of your e-books, and I love them all. I love the way you write. I know I would be beside myself on the first day of safari, and I’m so glad you understand that. I hope one of your Kenya safaris will be a once-in-MY-lifetime experience.
