Postcards from the Maasai Mara
January 24th, 2012
It feels like forever since I’ve been online, but what a trip it’s been. We’re packing our bags, wrapping up the last sad goodbyes, and getting one last morning game drive on the mara before boarding a small plane back to Nairobi, leaving Kitchwa Tembo, Sekenani Camp, and the magic of the Maasai mara behind us. We’ve spent the last 8 days in awe of the light, the land, and the incredible animals that live here. Coming here in January, things are quiet, the tourists aren’t here in mobs, and the camps are quiet – giving this place a wildness and solitude that it doesn’t have during migration.
Mornings have been early and cool, but waking to a cup of coffee or tea at you bedside makes it a little easier to slide your jeans on and drag your big lenses to the trucks. We’ve traveled with some amazing photographers, shared laughter over long meals lit by a hundred hurricane lanterns, watched the sunrise from high over the savannah in a hot air balloon, and watched the sun vanish, large and red, over the Oloololo escarpment. And we’ve made some lifelong friends, amazing memories and beautiful photographs. Thanks to all who joined us!

The next stop for me is Zanzibar for a few days of personal shooting and beach-lying. Some places you just have to go for the romance of the name alone. Say it with me: Zanzibar.

Beautiful images! Heading there myself in 3 weeks, cannot wait…Tanzania, and then Zanzibar too! Any packing tips you can share would be great.
Thanks for taking time to share a little of your amazing trip. I was there the end of Sept. and was in awe the whole time. The lions put on quite a show for us every day and we saw the Big Five in one day. Look forward to hearing more about your trip.

Zanzibar…
After climbing Kilimanjaro we also headed to Zanzibar for a rest. 3 days in Stonetown and and 2 days at the beach in Nungwi.

Sounds like a great trip David! We did Tanzania and Zanzibar for our honeymoon 4 years ago (almost literally, anniversary in 2 weeks!) and it was amazing. Can’t think of many better places to chillax than Zanzibar. Watch the sun go down from the terrace of the English Club and then rooftop dinner at 236 Hurumzi. Ah, happy days – enjoy!

I would simply absolutely looooove to go on a safari with my idol… planing on 2014 for my 50th however, so let’s keep in touch
I have been to Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar for 6 weeks in 2002. Amazing holiday! My parents will probably book a safari In Tanzania this year.

I’ve been on a safari last year in Tanzania for about 12 days and then spent some 5 days on Zanzibar. It was an awesome trip and would repeat it again in a heartbeat. Maybe I join you someday, would be nice…

looooooooove kichwa tembo! we stayed at bateleur a couple of year’s ago (next door) – nobody does safari like those guys!

Wonderful photos! We just returned from 10 days in Myanmar (Burma). You really should put this place on your map for places to visit and workshops to conduct, one of the most visually stunning places I’ve ever seen. A few of my favorites I’ve posted so far :
