resources5 GREAT GEAR

I get a bunch of email from folks about my gear. Gear is good. Without gear I’d be using a sketch-pad and pencil. But gear is only truly great in as much as it helps you achieve your vision. That’s why the Nikon vs. Canon debate doesn’t interest me. Gear is good – Vision is better. So, now that that’s out of the way, if you’re still curious about my gear and want to get your geek on, read on. While you’re at it, be sure to visit the Sponsor page. I’m sponsored by some pretty great folks, making some pretty great gear.

GREAT BOOKS AND LEARNIN’

Photographically Speaking, A Deeper Look at Creating Stronger Images, David duChemin. My fourth book, and perhaps my favourite.

Within the Frame: The Journey of Photographic Vision, David duChemin, I’m partial to this one.

VisionMongers, Making a Life and Living in Photography, David duCheminI’m partial to this one too.

Vision & Voice, Refining Your Vision In Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, David duChemin

The $5 eBooks at Craft&Vision.

In fairness, the top ones are mine. These are the others I’ve enjoyed:

I highly recommend Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography Books 1 and 2 for beginners – filled with solid stuff well taught. The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers and The Photoshop CS3 Book For Digital Photographers both have places on my shelves.

The Passionate Photographer, Steve Simon. Love this book. Steve’s got the cred to write this book, and it’s packed with great advice. If I were teaching in a classroom, I’d make this one of my texts.

The Moment It Clicks, by Joe McNally is an amazing book. I react to it here.

The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes, Joe McNally, A follow-up to The Moment It Clicks, I think this one’s even stronger than the first.

Welcome To Oz 2.0, by Vincent Versace, is the second edition of Versace’s excellent look at the role photoshop can have in achieving your vision. I was honoured, and a little dumbfounded, to be asked to write the Afterword to the second edition

Photography and the Art of Seeing, Freeman Patterson. A must. A classic.

The Photographer’s Eye, Michael Freeman. The best book I have read on composition. This should be on every photographer’s desk, well-studied, underlined, and highlighted. I can’t recommend this one highly enough.

The Tao of Photography – Seeing Beyond Seeing, Philippe L. Gross and S.I.Shaprio. An excellent read about learning to see. But if it’s just one book on this subject, get Patterson’s (above.)

GREAT ADVENTURE & NOMAD LINKS

On March 01, 2011, I adopted a nomadic lifestyle, living out of my 1983 Land Rover Defender, Jessie after giving up my Vancouver condo. Later I moved to a 2011 Jeep Wrangler and continued the adventure. Here are links to some of the best products and suppliers I’ve found.
