resources5 GREAT GEAR

I get a bunch of email from folks about my gear. Gear is good. Without gear I’d be using a sketch-pad and pencil. But gear is only truly great in as much as it helps you achieve your vision. That’s why the Nikon vs. Canon debate doesn’t interest me. Gear is good – Vision is better. So, now that that’s out of the way, if you’re still curious about my gear and want to get your geek on, read on. While you’re at it, be sure to visit the Sponsor page. I’m sponsored by some pretty great folks, making some pretty great gear.

resources3GREAT BOOKS AND LEARNIN’

Within the Frame: The Journey of Photographic Vision, David duChemin, I’m partial to this one.

VisionMongers, Making a Life and Living in Photography, David duCheminI’m partial to this one too.

Scott Kelby and the gang at Kelby Training consistently produce some of the best educational platforms for photographers and photoshoppers.

Visit Kelby Training online and take advantage of the truly excellent books, videos, and online learning. I highly recommend Scott’s Digital Photography Books 1 and 2 for beginners – filled with solid stuff well taught. The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers and The Photoshop CS3 Book For Digital Photographers both have places on my shelves.

The Moment It Clicks, by Joe McNally is an amazing book. I react to it here.

The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes, Joe McNally, A follow-up to The Moment It Clicks, I think this one’s even stronger than the first.

Welcome To Oz, by Vincent Versace, is an excellent look at the role photoshop can have in achieving your vision.

Photography and the Art of Seeing, Freeman Patterson. A must. A classic.

The Photographer’s Eye, Michael Freeman. The best book I have read on composition. This should be on every photographer’s desk, well-studied, underlined, and highlighted. I can’t recommend this one highly enough.

The Tao of Photography – Seeing Beyond Seeing, Philippe L. Gross and S.I.Shaprio. An excellent read about learning to see. But if it’s just one book on this subject – get Patterson’s (above.)

resources4IN GREAT COMPANY

By far one of the best memberships I’ve ever paid for is my membership with the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. Membership gets you some excellent discounts, a subscription to the Photoshop User magazine, and access to tutorials, help desk, and lots more. You can take my NAPP membership away from me when you pry it from my wacom-pen crippled hands.
