Within The Frame Photographic Adventures

Every year I travel with a handful of people to incredible places on this planet for one or two-week photographic adventures with my partner in crime, Jeffrey Chapman. The Within The Frame Adventures are the antithesis of the usual workhops; that makes them a perfect fit for some and less so for others. While there is a place for workshops with lectures and formal teaching time and opportunities to put your tripod in well-worn holes, that place is not ours. We believe most people learn best by doing, not listening.

At the heart of Within The Frame Adventures is the belief that you can’t photograph a place you’ve not experienced and so our preference is to go deeper rather than broader, to be in one place long enough to really begin to see it, to punch through the initial novelty and photograph not a record of your being there, but reactions and memories. We travel together as a family, albeit a small, somewhat sarcastic family where much of the learning happens in conversations over dinner and great wine. We teach not through lectures or formal times, but through conversations and dialogue. We give you time to wander, to get lost, to photograph, and to evaluate those efforts before heading out the next day to do it all over again. We believe the creative process and the way we learn differs from person to person and that no template will meet everyone’s needs. If you love an organic experience and learn well through late night conversations after dinner, (or any other meal for that matter) you’re the kind of person we’d love to travel with.

In 2011 we’ve got adventures in Oaxaca, Mexico for Day of the Dead, and two weeks in Laos and Cambodia in September, both of which are now sold out.

In 2012 we’ve already announced an incredible adventure to Lalibela, Ethiopia during Orthodox Christmas. I traveled and photographed Lalibela during this same festival in 2005 and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I can’t wait to go back! There are still spaces left. Click the photo below to be taken to the mini-site for more details.

Still un-announced for 2012 are more adventures in Africa, Europe, and Asia, all of which will be announced as soon as details and dates are finalized.

Most of our adventures sell out quickly. In 2011 our Croatian adventure, which took place on a chartered 50′ sailboat down the Dalmatian coast, sold out in 5 minutes. If you would like to be put on the mailing list to get first crack at the limited spaces on these trips, please send an email to Jeffrey Chapman and ask to be put on the mailing list.
